Fashion + Politics: Hillary Clinton “Sisterhood of the traveling pantsuits”
By Anna Gilkerson on Aug 27, 2008 inin blog, ecofashion, reviews |
Watching the 2008 democratic convention in Denver, right before Hillary Clinton’s speech, I was amused to find CNN showing an earlier clip of a wardrobe lighting check with a robust man holding up four of the exact same boxy pleated pants suits in yellow, orange, red and blue. She chose orange. It seemed to contrast nicely against the bold blue backdrop.
When I try and relate pants suits to appealing fashion I think Chanel, Katherine Hepburn, Yves Saint Laurent, Stella McCartney and in 1995, Tom Ford’s collection for Gucci, the famous hip-hugger suit, worn by Madonna.
“The pantsuit is Clinton’s uniform” quotes the Washington Post.
To Hillary Clinton, they could be her feminist statement, embracing a subliminal equality of all the pants in Washington. Or the trend might be that the economy is bad; we’re entrenched in an occupation abroad; we mistrust our government at home it is time to be safe and conservative.
Or… maybe they’re just so darned comfy. Donatella Versace begs to differ.
“I can understand (trousers) are comfortable but she’s a woman and she is allowed to show that,” Ms. Versace told Germany’s weekly newspaper Die Zeit.
I say, Let’s laugh about it! You tube is. As well as Letterman.
