Half of my heart is in Brooklyn. But one of the country’s most vibrant places is also its most toxic. Still very few people know that Exxon Mobil oil refineries on the Newtown Creek (which separates Brooklyn and Queens) began leaking in the 1940’s and 1950’s, leading to the country’s largest oil spill. Ever. It was estimated at originally being three times larger than the Exxon Valdez spill. Check out our recent post/video, courtesy VICE magazine, on Williamsburg and Greenpoint, and how little its residents know about local toxicity. The Center for the Urban Environment actually puts on educational boat tours along the creek, in addition to sponsoring Green Brooklyn…Green City.
The event, always free and open to the public, is not one to miss and the weather in Brooklyn tomorrow looks like it will be a balmy 73 degrees, which will be perfect as the event includes the outdoor area of the hall and downtown promenade. It’s being held from 11:30 to 5:00 so you can check out any of the workshops that are happening all day, or just stop by one of SBNYC’s member organization’s booths outside during your lunch break. I used to work at the Center and am proud of my former colleagues for putting on such a fun, informative and free event for the public. Click here for the full list of exhibitors and workshops and see some quick details below.
The Center joins forces with Greenmarket and over 75 exhibitors for its 4th Annual Green Brooklyn…Green City fair and symposium.
