Book review: Buddha: His Life and Teaching (Walter Henry Nelson)

There are a wide variety of books published about the life of the Buddha.  Nelson’s is a well-researched and nicely written commentary that makes  the life and teachings of the Buddha approachable as both an introduction and overview for anyone interested in the life of the Buddha or in Buddhism, including information on when and how Buddhism split into its different schools and the differences between them.  Nelson’s text also offers commentary on who the Buddha taught and why, including the Buddha’s view on the ordination of women, which Nelson feels was influenced by the socio-political climate of the times.  From Tarcher/Penguin and available at your local, independent bookstore.  (Tell ’em Elephant Journal sent ya!)
