The Super Bowl is Green This Year—is your Party? [Maura Judkis]

by on Jan 31, 2009

Great little briefing via Miss Maura Judkis of US News on 5 Ways to Green your Super Bowl: …NFL has been on a crusade for the past 14 years to reduce football’s impact on the environment, and has quietly taken a lot of ecofriendly steps. Sunday’s game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals [...]

C’mon people, Vote! (And tell your friends to vote!) for Congressman Jared Polis as Hottest Freshman at Huffington Post!

by on Jan 31, 2009

C’mon, Coloradoan, have you no pride! Vote Jared Polis for hottest incoming freshman Congressman, as of now we’re getting our butts kicked by some…egad…Republican! Ran across this blog on longtime elephant journal pal (Congressman) Jared Polis today: …CNN did a short profile on gay pol Jared Polis.  What I liked about the profile is how matter-of-factly Polis’ [...]

Hmmmm, interesting combination, strange predicament you’ve found yourself in… One more? Now you know how Joan of Arc must have felt! When asked to help [...]

Vodka: Absolut Clean. Sans Olive.

by on Jan 30, 2009

by Sarah Janelle Miller Clean and green is hard to find these days. In our complicated existence, simple is best. Heck, I need a cleaner that can do it all. Floors. Counters. Bathtub. Toilets. Mirrors. And de-germ my life. None of this “a product for each task!” Please! Is this a perfect world? Can I [...]

by on Jan 30, 2009

With the recession as depressing and stressful as it is, it is not the end of the world. Relaxation by way of sleep, proper nourishment, hanging close to home with friends & family and some body pampering may be all you need to get by.  I highly recommend trying traditional Chinese acupressure massage. This may [...]

Boulder band 3OH!3 to open for Katy Perry.

by on Jan 30, 2009

Everyone in Boulder, Colorado knows Sean Foreman and Nathaniel Motte of 3OH!3—the two-man bromance darling of teen-age girls everywhere (even Europe, these days)—but as they continue to explode in popularity, we can now say “We knew ‘em when.” Bringing the fun back to music, they’re opening for Katy Perry (seen in below video fearlessly stage-diving in recent [...]

Starting Over

by on Jan 30, 2009

We’ve all seen the pattern. Things begin and end. We begin again. This may mean starting your exercise again or dieting. You may find yourself smoking again and have to make a promise to yourself that you’ll quit. You may have quit drinking and need to jump back on the wagon. You might have sworn you’d be kinder and nicer to people and lost your temper. Fortunately, you’ve got a second chance.

Obama stocks Honest Tea in White House [Ecorazzi]; signs Equal-Pay for Women Act.

by on Jan 30, 2009

It’s a sad state of affairs for our food industry when the fact that our President (who just signed into law Equal-Pay!) deliberately drinks Coca-Cola-owned bottled chemical-less tea (because hot water plus loose tea is just too complicated) is news (remember when McCain’s campaign criticized Obama as ‘elitist’ for drinking Honest Tea? I don’t, either)…so [...]

better world books pema chodron scare

Sad? Read Pema Chodron and see me in the morning.

by on Jan 30, 2009

Morning Mourning Drugs aren’t always the answer. Depression isn’t always a disease—for many, including myself, it’s a part of being human, and occasional heavy cloud full of portent, magic, heavy meaning. And something about mornings can bring out the stillness in the pause between busy-nesses. Something about occasional mornings can awaken the contemplative mournfulness for [...]

Governor Bill Ritter appoints Boulder Rep Alice Madden as Colorado climate-change coordinator.

by on Jan 30, 2009

I first met Gov. Bill Ritter in the basement of Boulder’s City Club. A good guy, we was (at the time) considered a long-shot, out of left field candidate for governor in our (at the time) Red State. Four years later, his poll numbers are high and he continues to bring Red and Blue together, [...]

Ken Wilber: “Barack Obama is likely moving into truly Integral waves of development”

by on Jan 30, 2009

Ken Wilber, one of the leading spiritual philosophers of our time, has finally condescended to illuminate us as to his admiration for our new President—now that Mr. Obama has won and, you know, the election’s already decided. You heard it here first. Well, third. Okay, sixth.    “There probably hasn’t been as much rampantly enthusiastic [...]

Boulder, Colorado Mayor Shaun McGrath tapped by Obama for Washington D.C. post…elephantjournal.com editor Waylon Lewis to run.

by on Jan 30, 2009

It’s been reported all over. Everywhere. Here and There. Our mayor—a good, sharp, highly-competent man by the name of Shaun McGrath, is joining the Obama Administration. Even ‘worse’ for we Boulderites, we’ll also be losing his wife, Becca Heaton, ed-in-chief of Rocky Mountain Sports and longtime colleague/acquaintance of mine—she’ll join Mr. McGrath in D.C. As for [...]

Natural Vs. “Natural”

by on Jan 30, 2009

Yesterday at brunch, my friend made a comment about my hair. Yes, it is true, girls do not like comments about themselves (if it is good it is perceived as creepy and if it is mean it is perceived as a**hole-ness).  I recently dyed my hair “blonde” and there has been quite a big quarrel [...]

Obama and his Blackberry…reunited in the White House

by on Jan 29, 2009

President Barack Obama fought the hard battle, weathered the storm, and eventually prevailed.

Book Review: Buddhism for Busy People, by David Michie

by on Jan 29, 2009

Review via Marin Campbell, from the Holiday 08 issue This is an “unashamedly personal account,” and who can resist a good confession? Poignant but entertaining, informative but not pedantic—these were among the fastest 200+ pages I ever read. If Buddhism is a “mirror,” then Michie kindly holds it up for the reader. Here’s the essence [...]

In Colorado, Green VC bucks the Economy. [Pharmaca, Solar, Ethanol]

by on Jan 29, 2009

Want money? Word on the street is VC, Venture Capitol, has all but dried up. Well, not in Colorado—esp if your would-be company is ‘green.’ Excerpt: Puls said the increase “was driven largely by significant deals closed by two companies,” Fort Collins-based AVA Solar Inc. and Broomfield-based Range Fuels Inc. AVA Solar, which manufactures thin-film photovoltaic modules, took [...]

Walking the Green Talk = Smart Business? [Patagonia cut product line 30%]

by on Jan 29, 2009

Two styles of ski pants may be ‘all anyone needs‘…it may be the noble, right thing to do, to cut your line 30%…it may engender loyalty in consumers, as it has with me…but is walking your green talk really make for good business? Excerpt critical of Patagonia: …via Kelly Spors, I read this essay at GreenBiz.com by Joel [...]

Domino magazine: and another one bites the dust. [Ecorazzi]

by on Jan 29, 2009

We’ve reported on, well, ourselves—elephant journal—and more recently green magazine Plenty, Alpinist, and Backpacking Light and Christian Science Monitor all folding or moving online…well (with thanks for the tip to Ecorazzi) another one just bit the bottomline: “domino.” So let’s all take a moment and think of a few old media (as in print) that [...]

I Heart Ford—unlike Chrysler, GM, Merrill Lynch…allll the others flying private planes to Washington—Ford is…Ford Tough.

by on Jan 29, 2009

Worst quarter ever, 14.6 Billion buck loss—and Ford says it doesn’t need Federal (ie our) bail-out help. Now let’s just hope that they see the road ahead as an energy-efficient, innovative one—and don’t just go back to giving us huge trucks and SUVs.

peta sex xxx

“Studies Show Vegetarians Have Better Sex.” {PETA, of course}

by on Jan 29, 2009

Peta’s Super Bowl sexy-time ad is rejected by NBC. Update: Whoopi makes whoopie with vegetables on The View. Peta—People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals—has a long, loud, proud, unashamed (indeed, shameless) history of exploiting sexuality in the name of protecting animals (I’d rather go Naked that Wear Fur, thousands of naked models and interns [...]

Yay! Obama appoints slow food-minded Chef to White House. [Alice Waters, local food, White House Victory Garden]

by on Jan 28, 2009

The existing White House chef is great. This is even better, and comes close enough I’d think to say that Alice Waters (and all of us greenies, we got her back) got her wish for the Obamas to set an example three times a day by showing America the way back to healthy, local, organic. [...]

LOL…oh, wait, I do #7, #6, #5, #4: “7 Green Ways to Lose Friends & Alienate People,” via Earth First.

by on Jan 28, 2009

Great fun/slash/too-true article. Though who does #1? I don’t wanna know. Excerpt:    …sainthood may come off to the rest of the world as rude, condescending and downright disgusting. Nobody wants to be friends with a sanctimonious bastard that looks and smells like he just rolled out of a dumpster. If any of these 7 [...]

Coolest /slash/ Most Functional Signature Ever Award: joyengine crew.

by on Jan 28, 2009

I change my email signature once every few weeks, adding and deleting facebook and twitter and elephantjournal.com stories and links…why do all that when you can have a dope image, a downloadable-straight-into-their-addy-book-with-one-click Vcard, a couple links and a clean, fun look? Now if only you and I knew of a genius too-hip-for-hipster nationally-prominent design firm who [...]

On Heath Ledger + the Academy Awards Play by Mary Bevington

by on Jan 28, 2009

“If you can’t fix it…you gotta stand it”. ~ Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain Recently I reacquainted with a family friend who worked closely with Heath Ledger. At a lull in our conversation I gathered the courage to bring him up. “I thought about you when Heath Ledger died –“ She stammered, “Oh no, [...]

Hipster Runoff and the Search for Authenticity on the Web.

by on Jan 28, 2009

We have all been in line at a cafe/American Apparel/AmCo show and seen these AltPeople with their brightly colored tee shirt & glasses combo and wonder if they ever consider themselves to be ironic. It’s no mystery that in the day of the web, styles and ‘personal brands’ that are original or authentic are [...]

Recycled Roof Shingles Find New Use in Boulder County Road

by on Jan 28, 2009

I always love to hear about a new way to divert anything from landfills and the local Roofs to Roads Project has a great one. Collect tons of used asphalt shingles that have been removed from homes and other buildings and use them to pave a test road on North 63rd St in Boulder County. [...]

Wandering Boulder Canyon, a little poem by Mary Bevington.

by on Jan 28, 2009

We climbed in Boulder Canyon yesterday, an area rife with granite domes, grassy nooks, ever-lovin’ water. Just as travelers acquaint with cities by getting lost, we lost ourselves there. We wandered with infant eyes, scrambling up the canyon’s sides, looking for where we might go. High, near Light House dome, we spied a fawn, hind [...]

Yoga teacher Shiva Rea ~ by Scott Rodwin. [in Denver this weekend]

by on Jan 28, 2009

It’s easy to get hyperbolic when trying to convey my experience of studying with famous yoga teacher Shiva Rea. Let’s just say that the cliche “a force of nature” applies. I first met Shiva at the Estes Park Yoga Journal Conference in 2007.  She was teaching a 400-person class in the main hall, so I [...]

Being Slow

by on Jan 28, 2009

I woke up this morning ready for a cup of coffee. Last night, I watched a show about Ethiopia on the travel channel. It reminded me of the coffee I bought a few months ago from the local Ethiopian restaurant. The whole process of roasting your own coffee intrigued me. I tried it myself and loved it. It only takes about 10 or 15 minutes to put the green beans in a pot, open all the windows and shut off the smoke alarm, and roast them yourself. It would take me just as long to ride my bike to the coffee shop and buy some roasted coffee. But, how long has the coffee been sitting, roasted, leaking out all those wonderful flavors and aromas?

by on Jan 28, 2009

My Toxic Job. ~ Rick Gilbert

by on Jan 27, 2009

It’s common these days to talk about “toxic workplaces.”  This typically means a place of employment that has backstabbing or neurotic co-workers, or a corporate culture that sacrifices human well-being at the altar of the bottom line.  It can be an important issue, for sure.  However, I often chuckle when I hear “toxic” bandied about [...]

Brilliant Sanity is a collection of essays addressing the field of contemplative psychotherapy written by a wide range of therapeutic practitioners, and is one of the more interesting and approachable [...]

Happy Americans—with a Negro President!

by on Jan 27, 2009

Genius video, just sent via Alex King. And by genius I mean vaguely funny social commentary, not some sort of Einstein-like breakthrough in original video quality content. For that you’d have to go to…yes…the Daily Show, the first talk show in history to consistently deliver the truth, wrapped in a chocolate layer of funny, to [...]

elephant journal founder Waylon Lewis’ essay featured among ’9 Prominent Buddhists’ in 30th Anniversary issue of Shambhala Sun. Go out and buy it, support ‘em!

by on Jan 27, 2009

I grew up reading the Shambhala Sun, which once was called the Vajradhatu Sun, and was edited by my first editor idol Rick Fields (who died of Cancer a while back, but not before penning a final book of poetry entitled ‘F*ck you, Cancer, and other poems.”) His writing was amazing, direct, eloquent—for me he [...]

To heal the earth: clear the blocks. turn off appliances. scrubdown. make cuffs*

How does this Crap site have 5x the traffic that ours does? DailyOM vs. elephantjournal.com

by on Jan 27, 2009

Spiritual Materialism Alert. Okay, okay, maybe we’re all on the same side—changing the world (and ourselves, along the way) for the better: but when your design sucks, your home page features chakra pillows and animal spirit guidance…well, I guess that tells me one thing.
