I’m in love with Cara Baker’s Rosie.

I just saw this lovely lady perform the other night in a bar in Boulder (where half the crowd was out just for her, the other half for elephantjournaldotcom’s fave, Dechen Hawk)—and, as she has every time I’ve ever heard her sing since we were fellow Buddhist school punks back in the day (oh, we go way back) her combination of confident, sexy pop and bluesy, growling heart put me over the moon.

I’ve been wondering for a decade plus when we’d get an album out of her—now, a wonderful momma and wife, Cara’s finally managed to settle down and get in the recording studio. The wait seems to have done her good—she seems full formed, confident, with an achingly beautiful yet tough voice that reaches inside, hooks your heart, and ties to her (consider yourself warned).

Support her first album—and her sultry voice will support your heart, and mood, every time you listen to it. And I’m not just saying it ’cause I love and like her—plenty of people I’ve known for years whom I’d consider laying down on the tracks for—doesn’t mean I’d want to hear ’em lay down any tracks. ~ ed.

From her Facebook page (join):

…there aren’t many children who know precisely what they want in life before they even hit elementary school. For the thigh-high Cara Baker it was clear the moment she heard Aretha Franklin blaring from the stereo of her Dad’s 1978 Chrysler Cordoba; she had to sing…Cara began her formal studies in the world of opera at Boston University, but a workshop with the great Taj Mahal opened her eyes (and vocal chords)…she switched her focus, transferred to CalArts and began studying the blues along with other contemporary traditions. It was then that Cara found her voice.

Baker’s vocals are not just the product of thorough training…The kind of depth, emotion, and vulnerability that she shows on “Rosie” cannot be learned…Cara fearlessly offers us her heart…

Joining Cara on “Rosie” are industry veterans Leh-Lo Tony Rabalao, formerly of the band Joydrop, and Jordon Zadorozny, the mind behind the critically adored “Blinker The Star”. As a co-writer, Leh-lo offers his unconventional and clever pop esthetic, along with the craftsmanship of a master songwriter. As producer and multi-instrumentalist, Jordon contributes a pair of North America’s most sought-after ears, having spent studio time with the likes of Courtney Love, Billy Corgan, and Lindsey Buckingham. Add Cara’s bluesy pop style, and you have “Rosie” – an album whose hooks will reel you in…
