elephantjournal.com traffic report. Biggest day in history yesterday.

Update: Yesterday, thanks to our Michelle Obama goes Local article, we once again beat our all-time (well, we’ve only been focusing on the site for 4.5 months!) traffic record. We’re verging on 70K unique visitors a month.

Yesterday [March 15] we had our biggest traffic day in history: a touch over 4K unique visitors came to the site, visited an average of two pages each, and many of them return multiple times each month.

According to Google Analytics, we’re now at 66K a month Unique Visitors—6x the number of readers we had for our magazine after 6.5 years.

In the interest of transparancy, I’ve been doing these updates once in awhile—also because when we were a print magazine, and grew each issue, folks’ eyes would widen and say ‘it’s heavy! It’s getting big!’ With a web site, you have a more precise, if less physically apparent way of measuring success in getting the mission out to the masses (and you).

I met with a new advertiser this morning, and he said, “Ah, I miss the old mag, it was great.” His PC browser was small, didn’t show our site off very well, and it was a bit sad. So this little post is, as much of anything, a humble effort to get the word out to our fans that elephant journal is far, far larger in terms of readers’ eyeballs than it ever was as a magazine—only a few months after our final print issue sold off the last shelves of Whole Foods, Pharmacas etc. around the country and we took the sudden leap into new media (without much of a parachute).

More:  Below are a few compares (up through January) minus numbers to protect our colleagues’ privacy. Though elephantjournal.com isn’t even six months old, which hurts our rankings, our traffic is already surpassing a number of our veteran colleague sites (we’re the green line, below).

And we’re just getting started. Over the next two weeks, our web site will go through a thorough upgrade and redesign. Our aim is to forcibly take over the world  and force anyone and everyone to live a good life that also happens to be good for others, and our planet—whether they like it or not. ~ ed.
