Bruno drops in on the formerly-homophobic Eminem at MTV award shows. Controversial at first, is turned out to be…what else…a true-to-life joke. Click forward a bit.
Borat is s00o 2006! Time for Bruno, Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest “the joke’s on us” spoof of prejudice.
Homophobia may be pitiful—but it’s also fun…to make fun of.
I’m a busy boy—without much extra cash for fun, lately—and I can’t tell you the last movie I went too. But I gare-on-tee I’ll be setting up my Go Lite tent, camping out overnight in front of my local movie theater and getting the first tickets to see Bruno—a serious comedy that makes pops the zit that is homophobia…by squeezing it.
Click here for the NY Times’ review. Because sometimes taking a step forward in this, the civil rights issue of our time, means lancing the pimple that is our society’s still-prevalent homophobia. (It ain’t always pretty)
I know I, for one, am Mr. Gay Civil Rights, and yet for years I was squeamish about homosexuality, on a personal level. Thankfully, I grew up knowing a bunch of great friends in my Buddhist community who were gay and lesbian, and familiarity is of course the greatest enemy of ignorance. Still, if I don’t come out of Bruno shaken and entertained, I’ll be mightily disappointed—I’ve been a fan of Ali G, Borat and Bruno going back to Sacha Baron Cohen’s excellent HBO series (rent it).
