American Apparel sells DIY Tie Dye. But is it Eco?

Tie Dye is a classic symbol of earth-luvin’ hippieness, right up there with Birkenstocks and hairy armpits. But are chemical dyes, flushed down millions of hipsters’ drains across America, good for our planet? I daresay not. Still, DIY represents some of the best and old-timiest of fashion: personality, craft, fun, unexpected creativity.

  1. Erik says:

Hello! In April 2009 American Apparel hired my company, Made By Hippies Tie Dyes, to teach them how to tie dye. They had been experimenting for a while making some tie dyes but wanted to learn more. So we drove down from Oregon to L.A. for a week and had a great experience working with the employees at American Apparel. There is a video on youtube titled "Made By Hippies In Downtown L.A." that highlights our trip there. So some of the tie dyes they are making and promoting are a result of the lessons they learned from us.

As for the environmental friendliness of the dyes used in making tie dyes the leading supplier of dye for making tie dyes in the world, Dharma Trading Company, says "natural dyes are often neither safer nor more ecologically sound than synthetic dyes." Besides unless your wearing natural colored clothing there was some type of dye used in making your clothing somewhere along the line regardless if it's tie dyed or not. But anyway we loved working with American Apparel and helping them become better tie dyers. We look forward to the world wide tie dye revolution! Peace!
