Photos: the “elephants unite tonite” party at Laughing Goat.

A few months back, I was thinking of running for City Council and began to schedule a ton of weekly parties at private homes and public spots. One of the parties was to be hosted by our friends at Laughing Goat cafe, a Meet Greet chance for the Boulder public to come and engage with me on the issues they’re passionate about.

Retitled “Celebrate Waylon Not Running For City Council,” we decided (rrrrather last-minute) to hold the party anyway (thanks for the reminder to Jonny and Dechen, buddies at The Goat). With only 10 business hours warning, I created a Facebook event (which was useless, as all the kids say no one uses Facebook anymore except to update status or look at photos “of weirdos, high school friends who are getting fat, friends having babies, parties, girls”). And we blogged it, and tweeted it out, and lots of our Boulder tweeter friends RTed it, with thanks.

We got about 40 people, good friends, over the course of three hours—a bit shy of our last party, which magnetized 200 over the course of four hours and featured live music and bells and whistles…but considering that this gathering really had no purpose, beyond hanging and blabbing and giving out a ton of old magazines and new stickers, and talking and drinking, it was fine.

It felt old-fashioned, cosmopolitan, really—just sitting around and getting into in-depth conversations, not something I normally do. We ate good food, drank great local beer and non-local wine, hollered at and with the Thursday Night Bike Ride, and eventually called it a night.

Just as 9 pm rolled up, and half our crowd dispersed to go out to bars or to go home, Barry Siff, a candidate for City Council, rolled up on his bike, fresh from the City Council meeting re development and house size issues, and we had a great convo on the issues. Really appreciated him stopping by—as well as famous great writer Marc Barasch, Joe Pezzillo and Myriah Conroy and their kiddy, Gwen Bell the mindful social media queen, Mat Gerson of econsciousmarket.com, my pal Greer who I hadn’t seen in forever and likely won’t see forever again, Andrea of Wanderlust Festival and All Phases Events, and our many other random pals who decided to drop by on a busy Thursday night.
