Joana, Thanks for this, and the wonderful comments. It is a difficult situation we find ourselves in, but we do have to stop and think about it, otherwise, we just continue on. I don't think we can leave this to the children…but I also completely understand Grandma D's sentiments: she wants to be able to travel to see her grandchildren who are scattered everywhere! Of course. And no one would want to deny her (or any of us) the pleasure of visiting our dear ones. This is the world we've built for ourselves — cosmopolitan, global — and we have to think our way out of it. Where to begin??

Yes, Grandma D–the children–we can't just expect them to gleefully take up the responsibility for the messes that we don't have answers for or have simply neglected. each successive generation has taken on new, more complex problems; BUT, I would say from the baby boomers on, the stakes have gone up astronomically (pun intended

yes, too many people who think global warming is a "hoax", or that God or technology (or TechnoViking will keep us and our endless growth economic models flying…I know too many people with advanced degrees who can't/won't recycle…they don't understand my disgust and sense of urgency~
it is rooted in LOVE.
for this planet, for all creatures, for you and your family…

I remember hearing Dr. Helen Caldicott ("If You Love This Planet") back in the mid-90's, and much of her warnings about the environment have become frightening realities. our brains, hopelessly multitasking, can't comprehend how quickly and broadly the world is changing…

It is uncomfortable and difficult to think of modern life without the convenience of cheap airtravel. For a lot of people, it's simply not an option.

But the cost to the environment is almost unthinkable. It's a weird place we've put ourselves in. Hmmph.
