Winter Yoga. ~ via Kelsi Coia

Like many of my friends, I have fallen off the yoga train, which I do every summer. Something about Colorado summers makes me crave being outside and not in a yoga studio. I know yoga does not have to be practiced inside, but I just do not have the self-discipline to continue a yoga practice in the summer when I also have the option of hiking, biking, walking, lounging. I always try and throw some yoga in the mix, but somehow it is pushed down the priority list. And this summer especially has been a crazy, chaotic, whirlwind experience of rapid personal growth.

I recently graduated from college and moved from Boulder, Colorado, back to my hometown, Aspen. I’m back living with my parents (eek!) and doing exactly what I didn’t want to do after graduating from college.

But here I am and honestly, I am loving it. For those who have never visited, it really is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. Crazy tourists (and locals) aside, I feel like this valley is a little slice of heaven. And the summer is an amazing time to be here because there is so much to do outside (which to most college grads is a plus because being outside is free). So I’ve done all that hiking, biking, walking and lounging around outside all summer.

However, there is a black hole where my yoga practice used to be. And now that summer has gone (it’s currently dumping snow as I write), those summertime distractions are gone and that black hole has grown to consume my thoughts.

I need yoga!

Plus, as many skiers and snowboarders know, yoga is a perfect way to get ready for winter sports. My snowboarding radically changed after I started practicing four years ago.

Most of my practice has been in Boulder, where I went to college. I have only been to a few studios in Aspen (and the surrounding area) years ago, and have never felt a strong connection to any of them. So I am going to sample studios in the area (Aspen, Basalt, Carbondale, and Glenwood) to find a studio, sangha, and teacher and my yoga groove back. Over the next few weeks (or months) I’ll be visiting different locations and writing about my experience. And hopefully my notes and experience can help anyone who is here for a visit and is looking for some yoga.
