errrmmmm.....

"...a study by the International Agency for Research on Cancer showed a limited correlation between oral cancer and the drinking of hot maté and on large quantities of mate. Smaller quantities (less than 1 liter daily) and warm rather than hot mate consumption were found to increase risk only slightly...Yerba maté consumption has been associated with increased incidence of bladder, esophageal, oral, squamous cell of the head and neck, and lung cancer. However, a case-control study showed no increased incidence of bladder cancer in mate drinkers.

The pyrrolizidine alkaloids contained in maté tea are known to produce a rare condition of the liver, veno-occlusive disease, which produces liver failure due to progressive occlusion of the small venous channels in the liver. One fatal case has been reported in a young British woman who consumed large quantities of maté tea from Paraguay for years" (from Wikipedia: Yerba mate)...

save the rain forests, but get cancer! woohoo!

OMG what's your IQ? You know everything. We must bring you, Luke, over to our side, the force is strong with you!

BTW, I'm not being sarcastic. I don't know how you know all this stuff all the time you put in comments.

Tom F
i've enjoyed mate for a long time. its delicious. i heard it was carcinogenic, looked it up, and found some studies that found it can be (if regularly consumed...) - now i only drink it once in awhile ;)

Tom F
oh, by the way. that new profile picture is effing awesome. hahaha

Lopa B
Most of the studies I researched showed that the increased cancer was specifically linked to the very hot temperatures at which mate is generally consumed in South America. Making a blanket statement that it will give you cancer is, imho, a bit too sweeping a generalization.

Regardless, it's always wise to follow the Ayurvedic adage: "For whom and when". In moderation, for some people, mate shown great benefits. But not for all the people, and not for all the time.

Side note, I know the folks at Guayaki well, and it is a GREAT company, through and through. Glad to see them getting more airtime. ... See More

Waylon, did you get a gig with HuffPost or what? HIGH FIVE!!

Rick G
I agree with Tom--about the profile picture, not the mate. I have no clue about that either way. I do like saying "Guayaki," however...

Yeah, I think Guayaki is a good company. Another good one is Wisdom Natural Brands, the parent company of Wisdom of the Ancients herbal teas.
