The pyrrolizidine alkaloids contained in maté tea are known to produce a rare condition of the liver, veno-occlusive disease, which produces liver failure due to progressive occlusion of the small venous channels in the liver. Making a blanket statement that it will give you cancer is, imho, a bit too sweeping a generalization. Regardless, it's always wise to follow the Ayurvedic adage: "For whom and when". In moderation, for some people, mate shown great benefits. But not for all the people, and not for all the time.
