10 Great Reasons to Support Elephant Journal

One person can make a difference, and everyone should try.     ~ John F. Kennedy

As an enthusiastic woman who gets fired up about everything from Pema Chodron to Larkburger, it is not unusual for me to fall passionately under the spell of various causes including the arts, social service, politics, green-living, natural products, and yoga.

Elephant Journal is no exception.

I’m drawn to it in the same, moth-to-a-flame way I am drawn to public radio and the New York Times. I know that the content places me in the midst of a like-minded community of people (although not too like- minded) that feels like home. I respect it, I value it, and feel compelled to roll up my sleeves and make the case for sponsorship.

And at $9 a month, it feels like a steal…

Here are my top ten reasons for supporting Elephant Journal:

1. It’s saucy: Where else can you get ‘sexy’, ‘naked’, and ‘supermodel’ in a headline without having to hide your magazine under the bed?

2. It’s irreverent: I loved John Pappas’ article Dharma Drinks, Buddhist Brewers and Rapping Monks about the more unconventional and unique places to discover and share the Dharma.

3. It’s reverent: As a baby buddhist, I look for new takes on the basics to strengthen and deepen my practice. Articles like Farnoosh Brock’s Committment to Stillness: A Habit of Daily Meditation provides support through the obstacles I encounter.

4. It’s uncomfortable: Gary Smith’s Wool is Cruel article about the horrific treatment of sheep at the hands of Australia’s wool trade had me cringing for weeks. How did I not know this and what should I do about it? Essential discomfort, essential awareness = essential action.

5. It’s inspiring: I totally dig Joana Smith’s lovely posts Candy and Gold. Unique imagery, stream of consciousness, precious insight. Makes me want to make some art.

6. It’s laugh out loud: Waylon’s random-late-Friday-afternoon link to the Handsome Men’s Club snippet from Jimmy Kimmel had me in stitches.  I don’t watch TV really, so I usually miss this stuff.

7. It’s unique: Wild to encounter an editor willing to throw himself under the bus for journalistic integrity. Go Waylon, go.

8. It’s independent: I am hyper-aware that there are a only a few precious (precious few) media outlets left that are as democratic, informative, challenging, and inspirational as Elephant. I’m willing to stand up for that.

9. It’s community creating: In the highly individualized, and somewhat isolating age of the internet, is there anything more important than community?

10. It’s artsy: How about a little poem for the Earth, or some fecal matter art to push your boundaries?

It’s all here. It won’t always be here unless you stand up for it too. What are your top ten reasons for supporting Elephant?
