I wish more people would write blogs like this that are actually interesting to read. With all the crap floating around on the internet, it is a great change of pace to read a blog like yours instead.

[...] 10. Keep coming back. When you’re new to anything there will be moments of frustration and discomfort. Despite what you might see on TV commercials, hatha yoga is usually not the same as going to a spa to get pampered. It’s hard work. It can be exhausting — physically, mentally and emotionally. At times you will want to throw up your hands and quit (or at least curse out your teacher for making you hold that pose you hate). Don’t. This is where the healing happens. Breathe into it, and come back tomorrow. You’ll be glad you did. [...]

Thank you for your wise words. Insight meditation, more than asana practice, has been my trail through the dark forest. In silence, all is revealed—whether we like it or not! Whenever I leave for a 30-day retreat, friends will say things like, "Oh, that sounds so relaxing." I want to say, "You've never done this, have you?", but instead I say something nebulous like, "Well, not exactly."

Your explanation of relaxing into the challenges of asana practice and how this leads to freedom follows the sutras. In Alistair Shearer's translation, the three sutras that address asana say: 2.46: The physical posture should be steady and comfortable. 2.47: It is mastered when all effort is relaxed and the mind is absorbed in the infinite. 2.48: Then we are no longer upset by the play of opposites. I've written about this too, trying to bring it down to earth. Thanks for your wise words that shed light on it from a different, and very helpful, angle.
