elephant journal reviews: YogaEarth.

YogaEarth is another of a long line of healthy, eco-ish products aimed at the LOHAS market. What makes it stand out? It’s created by, of and for the folks who use it—in this case, yogis.

The YogaEarth phytonutrient powder mixes are vegetarian-safe, loaded with protein, amino acids, B-vitamins, organics, herbals, Ayurvedics and macrominerals.  The products have been formulated by the organization’s Nutritional Science Board, featuring over 200 years of experience in Eastern and Western nutrition, medicine, mind-body wellness and healing.

Furthermore, I like that, built right into its mission, its not solely about profit, but rather generosity:

YogaEarth has teamed up with three pioneering non-profit organizations to support sustainable social change.  For each partner YogaEarth is launching a program the Summer of 2010 to donate nearly 20% of sales from a select group of yoga nutrition products.  Proceeds from the program will be tracked publicly and donated quarterly to support the field programs of each organization.

Social Pioneer Partners

Off the Mat, Into the World®

Off the Mat, Into the World ® (OTM), a program of the nonprofit, The Engage Network, is dedicated to bridging yoga and activism.  Founded in 2007 by Seane Corn, Hala Khouri and Suzanne Sterling, OTM’s mission is to use the power of yoga to inspire conscious, sustainable activism and ignite grassroots social change. OTM helps individuals take the path of yoga “off the mat and into the world,” expanding the sphere of change outward to local and global communities. We do this by facilitating personal empowerment through leadership trainings, fostering community collaboration, and initiating local and global service projects.

Tenpa Monastary & Orphanage (YTDR)

The Tenpa Tibetan Monastery in Mainpat, India, is a project of the YTDR Foundation, founded by Lama Tulku Karma Rinpoche to provide thousands of Tibetan refugees with shelter, education, health care, and a center to preserve Tibetan culture and heritage.  To date, YogaEarth has donated vitamins essential for the nourishment of Tenpa’s youth, and collaborated in fundraising events with partners such as Lululemon.  Future YogaEarth donations will help to build a Tibetan children’s orphanage and refugee camp in central India.

Y.O.G.A. for Youth

Founded in 1993 by Krishna Kaur, Y.O.G.A. for Youth, is a non-profit organization that brings yoga, meditation, breathing techniques, chanting, deep relaxation and stimulating discussions on the philosophy of yoga to urban youth. Y.O.G.A for Youth works with incarcerated youth and other urban youth populations at risk of not utilizing their full potential.   The program aims to give youth practical tools to enrich their lives and assist them in effectively meeting life’s challenges now and in the future.  The Y.O.G.A. for Youth mission is to provide urban youth with tools for self-discovery that foster hope, discipline and respect for self, others and community.

And, responsibility:

YogaEarth is committed to continually minimizing its footprint on the environment, and striving to achieve zero waste at the company and product level.

The company has designed a packaging program to optimize use of recycled materials, while protecting product integrity and safety. Outer packaging is FSC-certified and 80% minimum post-consumer waste. Packaging is produced in fully wind-powered facilities.

The YogaEarth products are delivered with absolutely no preservatives, additives, artificial flavours or colouring. The company delivers high-grade ingredients in their natural form, without relying upon extensive manipulation or manufacturing processes, which strip nutritional content from product formulas.

Testimonials:

“What lights me up about Vitality is that we have a combination of organics, herbals and Ayurvedics. So we have everything form Amalaki, to organic cordeceps to bee pollen and royal jelly to CoQ10. This has been a huge source of replenishment for me, whether I take it in the afternoon because I am not practicing that day, and I’m just working and teaching, or whether I take it after my practice. There is an absolute, rejuvenation, regeneration quality that Vitality delivers, that is unmistakable to me, to my body, my mind and practice ”
Elena Brower, Owner, Virayoga NYC, Yoga Teacher, Global Yoga Ambassador for Adidas.

“Finally! This is the ‘go-to’ nutritional system we yogis have been waiting for. Conveniently created in a supplement powder that dissolves in water, this yoga- specific elixir boosts performance, enhances the asana experience, replenishes and builds cellular health and even tastes great. I recently began taking these ‘pre’ and ‘post’ supplements before and after every practice and have felt more energized and yet somehow more relaxed. That’s the combo I’m looking for!”

Balance offers me a host of qualities and energies that I would have had to take many capsules for. The probiotics, the digestive enzymes, the electrolytes to prevent muscle cramping or muscle weakness are essential whether I am practicing yoga, going for a run, doing any cardio or stretching of any kind. Balance also features high doses of protein, so that I can use that to start my day if I have to rush and need some energy and endurance.”

“With Balance I’ve also noticed a difference in my mental clarity and focus and even my skin. As for my practice its also enhanced. When I’m doing certain poses like inversions and balances, there’s been a shift. I almost feel the way I felt when I’ve done cleansing fasts. On this product I have that same kind of steady clarity in challenging poses.”

Where Elena Brower goes, I follow (I trust and respect her judgement). In conclusion, it’s good to see a new generation of products that are thoughtfully produced, environmentally-responsible, and have philanthropy built-in. I’ll report back and fill in this review with some more precise evaluations as I take the stuff myself, practice yoga, and see how I feel and like the product.
