[...] Whatever you think. Why should I go vegan? Why shouldn’t I? What’s a good (truly) vegan ice cream? What’s a good vegan cheese (I’ve been buying almond for some time, and am impressed—they work for nachos! Not so sure about pizza). [...]

I loved reading all the comments! I've tried the vegan cheeses and Daiya, but for me, it's just not worth the price, so instead of cheese on my pizza, I make a cheesy sauce. I just throw some tofu, soymilk, nutritional yeast, and garlic salt in my food processor until it's thick and creamy, and then I heat it up and pour it over my pizza, which is usually topped with cooked and raw veggies. So I still get that creamy, cheesy taste, but without the "fake" stuff and the fat.
There is no doubt that cheese is good, and literally addictive, but I gave it up on a whim and I kept going by rationalizing it to myself, and like other posters said, thinking beyond myself. And now that I know what cheese really is (I never gave much thought to food before), it kind of smells like milk that has been left out for too long to me. But again, I loved cheese, but I wasn't devastated about giving it up, so I'm sure others are having a lot harder time doing it than me. I agree with those who say it's not about being perfect: doing something is better than nothing, and the degree to which you're doing it should be a personal choice. Food should be a pleasure, not a source of stress and guilt. Once it becomes an issue, it is better to back away for a while and come back to it when you're ready.

Hang in there, I was vegetarian for 15 years before giving up cheese. It will happen. I unfortunately don't feel the same way about Daiya as some people on this thread. While tasty if prepared well, it's in no way shape or form a replacement for real cheese. My recommendation? Eat cheeseless pizza and then dip or top it with a great tasting vegan cream cheese like follow your heart. It's definitely not the same as real pizza, but at least it's tasty and you can kind of get your cheese fix.

[...] I know you’ve been hearing about gluten lately and for some of you it makes you want to go eat a slice of pizza, but that urge could very well be a sign that it’s definitely a good idea to try this experiment. [...]

At one time I also felt this battle waging inside me, but now that I feel the connection between me eating cheese and me putting a calf through 4 months of hell I have found that I no longer desire the taste of cheese and in fact the thought of it disgusts me. I can't stand the thought of my complicity with the veal industry and the suffering of those poor little ones. Good luck to you with your own inner battle.
