elephant readers poll: Best “Mindful” Dentist in Boulder.

Your Favorite Eco-minded Boulder, Colorado Dentist?

Over the last eight years, building up elephant first as a magazine and now as a new media site, I not only haven’t had dental insurance—I usually haven’t had any kind of health insurance at all. And, while I brush regularly (flossing’s another matter) and have never had a cavity, my teeth have for the first time a visible buildup of plaque. TMI? Probably.

So, in any case, it’s time to get myself to a dentist. So I asked a few of my 36,000 closets FB friends and elephant fans who I should go see, and got a wide variety of great answers. Here they are. If you’d like, vote or leave a comment, and my simple question: “who’s your favorite dentist in Boulde?” might become helpful for the thousands of Boulderites new to town or university or just looking to switch things up, every year.

Here’s my original question, and the answers:

Waylon Lewis ADVICE: DENTIST? Sorry to ask again, but I’ve been broke, so didn’t go…who are your fave dentists in Boulder? Looking for something “eco,” don’t want lotsa toxic crap in my mouth. Haven’t been in years and my lower teeth are getting plaquey.

Kevin H I like Baxt and Sewell, though I haven’t been in a while. 🙂

o

Jeff S: i was really happy with sewell

o

Justin A Dr Koral. http://tinyurl.com/26oyelr. Pearl and Broadway, above Ben and Jerry’s.

o

Cory: dr.bentz is the best!

o

Waylon Lewis What about Birnbaum?

o

Waylon Lewis How much is a cleaning, like $100 or something? Can you get insurance that makes sense?

o

Kate L dr. anne birnbaum.

o

Sarah S no dental insurance makes sense.

o

Kate L ‎$60 buck a cleaning

o

Tarah Michelle Dr greene

o

Merete Mueller I went to Birbaum for a cleaning and one small cavity filled. Nice people—explained everything to me instead of just diving into my mouth with a bunch of instruments. Offered to give me a wax hand treatment.

o

Rosemary O dr. stephen koral. above ben and jerry’s corner of pearl and broadway. super eco, uses the least amount of metal possible, etc. he’s the top rated on all the eco-dentistry sites.

o

Doreen Hing You are so funny…

o

Stephanie Potter Dental is Key! Good luck.

o

Pat Smith Also check into whether fillings should be replaced. If so, use white composite and get the mercury out of your mouth. The composite also holds your filled teeth more effectively.

o

Waylon Lewis Thanks! I don’t have any cavities, but it’s been five years at least, so who knows. I have a crazy amount of plaque and am a bad flosser, but steady brusher.

o

Nancy W Dr. Koral 🙂

o

Catherine A Dr. Koral 🙂

o

Melissa Pickering Dr. David Jackson is awesome!

o

Liz Lewis Joseph Floss young man! We have horrible gums in our family.

o

SM: Everyone at Indra’s Net used to go to Gary Hubiak, and stayed on with Dr. Birnbaum when he sold his practice to her. They’re all still very happy with her, perhaps even more so than they were with Gary.

o

Kate L as sarah silverman says, “death creeps in through the gums.”

o

Michael Levin Only floss the ones you want to keep.

o

Pat Smith

Waylon, I too don’t have dental insurance but had a great visit with Dr. Eric Van Zytveld in LoDo. He’s done a bit of research and gave me some great gum/tooth enamel health tips. It’s really important, especially after drinking citrus or w…ine, to rinse and get rid of acids which degrade tooth enamel and eat into teeth at the gum line. Baking soda counteracts this issue. Also rinse three times a week with a Listerine type of antibacterial and every evening use ACT or the like for healthy teeth to get rid of plaque film. The older we humans become, the more our gums deteriorate and expose teeth without or weak enamel at the gumline…acids and bacteria from sugar create the tooth decay in those vulnerable areas. That’s the best way to leverage health on a non-dental insurance budget.See More

o

Waylon Lewis Pat, that could be a helpful blog right there!

o

Margo Shean Dr. Summers

o

Katyayani P Dental insurance is a complete and utter waste of money. It covers almost nothing and costs a fortune. When I had dental issues, I used CareCredit which doesn’t charge interest for an entire year for all health care costs (even veterinarian costs!). And I like them even more because they gave me another year of no interest on my bill with them.

o

Pat Smith Waylon, let me know what to do next; I’d rather get the straight scoop from the good doc!

o

Deborah K Also don’t know if you have an HSA (health-savings account tied to health insurance). Those plans don’t tend to cover dental, but you can pay for dental expenses out of your HSA.

o

Roni C Dr. David Jackson for our fam.

o

Brian B I like Dr Lisa Kalfas… non-toxic, high tech, woman… 303-447-9161

o

Bill C Dental Health Centers on 28th … they offer nutritional counseling and have a raw food kitchen inside of the practice … organic raw chocolate bon bons after your appointment anyone? Seriously though very cool …. Stephen Perry is my friend and an amazing guy … but they’re all good.

o

Amanda S Birnbaum!

o

Doreen H Bad Flosser, Steady Brusher… Good for classifieds… I floss for a week, once a year, after going to the dentist. Flossing is a conspirancy devised by the flossing industry…

o

Amanda S True BUT I got a cavity in between my teeth once!

o

Shawn B Dr. Jackson is the best in town.

o

Neil G try “Oil Pulling”, your own journal promoted it only 19 hours ago…. do you need to me put the link : )

o

Waylon Lewis Tried it last night! But I have some plaque buildup…this isn’t about whitening teeth, merely!

o

SB: Dr Judith Timchula – natural & sustainably minded, awesome crew – she is GOOD and a sweetheart.

o

Deborah K If you are broke you should go to dental aid. Very affordable. They do a great job with teeth cleaning.

o

Waylon Lewis I had a weird experience at Dr. Timchula’s…I had 300 or more in gift certificate, went for one check up, never got my teeth cleaned, and somehow wound up owing them 200 bucks or something. Not cool.
