Yogis and Buddhists fund NASCAR?!

Apparently, all of the American ones do.

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the article.  It’s a piece about how a Congressional Representative from Minnesota is receiving death threats because of her proposal for Congress to cease having American taxpayers sponsor a NASCAR team.  The team is sponsored by the U.S. Army.

What the what?!

Since when are U.S. taxpayers supporting the wasteful consumption of fossil fuels?  And a friggen death threat?  Really?

“There have been no reported threats against Republicans who have proposed stripping funding from abortion, family planning, public television, health care, environmental protection agencies, WIC, the FBI, NASA, state police, education, Medicaid and Medicare.”

As one of my friends aptly put it in response to my sharing this with her, “so we (tax payers) help fund the gov’t fund an entertainment where fossil fuels are consumed with reckless abandon for what??? to keep demand for oil high and the need for troops battling for US interests in the middle east continues, or so its important to open more offshore oil facilities or open up the wilderness of Alaska to more oil wells???”

Put me on record as seconding this wise representative’s proposal.  The Preamble to the U.S. Constitution states that our government is to seek the General Welfare of the citizenry; i.e., the common good for the commonwealth.  Funding to NASCAR needs to stop way before we cut aide to citizens facing challenging life circumstances.

I am having a hard time fathoming that some of my fellow Americans seriously would say NO to Public broadcasting, Social Security, Welfare, the NEA, and Planned Parenthood, but YES to an obscenely over-funded Defense Department – and NASCAR.

And again, a death threat?

I think I need a beverage.

p.s. all of the American Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Wiccans, Pagans, Agnostics, and Atheists are funding NASCAR too.
