What Does Love Mean?

Is love just some mushy word? Or is it a subtle dimension of reality?

“Love Means to reach for the sky and

with every breath to tear a hundred veils.

Love means to step away from the ego,

to open the eyes of inner vision and

not to take this world so seriously.

Congratulations dear heart!

You have joined the circle of lovers,

tell me in your own words

when did all this throbbing begin?

I was absorbed in my work in this world

but I never lost my longing for home.

One day, exhausted with no strength left,

I was lifted suddenly by the grace of Love.

To describe this mystery there are no words.”

~from Rumi: Hidden Music by Azima Melita Kolin and Maryam Mafi

“We ought to stop taking our conscious plans and decisions with such infinite seriousness…

Love not only prefers the good of another to my own, but it does not even compare the two… Love shares the good with another not by dividing it with him, but by identifying itself with him so that his good becomes my own…

The truth I love in my brother cannot be something merely philosophical and abstract. It must be at the same time supernatural and concrete, practical and alive. And I mean these words in NO metaphorical sense. The truth I must love in my brother is God himself, living in him… And I can only discern and follow that mysterious life by the action of the same Holy Spirit living and acting in the depths of my own heart.” ~ from No Man Is An Island by Thomas Merton
