How odd then that these ancient Sanskrit texts deliver stories of pure love in external narrative casings or packages that so closely resemble the most impure, damaging social traits! (Like violence towards children.)903 views

Stage 3 is called "radical" because it is a huge step from our normal experience of life. Many people live life doing the "stage 1-2 cha-cha-cha", dancing back and forth between "letting their hair down" and "getting their act together." Many never ever achieve the TOTAL self-acceptance of stage 3, which is requisite to having total acceptance of others and unconditional love.1,585 views

At the end of all things, despite my best efforts to revive myself, the whole experience was revealed to be a choice: I could choose to move beyond the veil without ego and its tools or rest in hell.880 views

If any place can teach you not to over identify with things, it is this crooked, mysterious, charmed, old house. It has seen us mere mortals come and go, but she still stands. She knows we were not the first to live under her protection, and will not be the last.5,830 views

A student of mine took an unplanned break from yoga. She had no idea when she rolled up her mat that it would be 4 months until she next unrolled it. She didn’t decide to stop. Her life simply shifted, creating a crack wide enough for her practice to slip through. “It’s pretty amazing how much I lost,” she said after her first class back.442 views

Will this be the teacher of the future? Polished, marketed, with a great iPod playlist, delivering a sweaty sequence but devoid of any knowledge of where it all comes from? No Patanjali, no Yogananda, no Iyengar, no Bhajan?236 views

Have you ever been in a yoga class where the teacher is leading you through a series of crunches, or core planks, or boat poses, and you just get this image in your head of punching that teacher in her smug little face?1,288 views

I question the lazy default position of teaching Patanjali's dualistic authoritarian pronouncements as "yoga philosophy" - while giving them the status of "scripture." A critical reading of the text combined with some contrasting neuroscience, somatic psychology, Buddhist and tantric reading seems more in the spirit of viveka and an engaged living tradition. In the context of the modern East/West yoga experiment I think we can have a much more interesting and relevant discussion.1,108 views
