elephantjournal.com hiring: Job Description.

Managing Editor: Elephant Journal, elephantjournal.com

@elephantjournal: voted best for #Green content on Twitter two years running.

Boulder, Colorado residents only.

Ideal applicants have meticulous organizational skills and follow-through, and are comfortable with deadlines. Excellent written communication skills are a must (you are horribly irritated by bad grammar, ALL CAPS, “its” when “it’s” is intended…). Applicants are familiar with elephantjournal.com, past issues of elephant magazine (we can give you a few copies) and are personally passionate about “the mindful life”…green, yoga, adventure, politics and our other areas of focus within our mission: “to spread the good word about the mindful life beyond the choir and to those who didn’t know they gave a care.” You have journalism training, editorial experience, experience in new and social media a bonus.

The position is 20 hours a week with a minimum commitment of 1.5 years including a two week trial period—you feel it out, we feel it out and meet after the two weeks.

Managing Editor will work with Waylon Lewis, ele’s Ed-in-Chief, Lindsey Block, elephant’s small staff/volunteer editors/writers, interns, and head up our editorial, day-to-day. Pay is $14.00/hour to start, plus bonuses based on traffic, quality. Free yoga in Boulder with team. Some free meals. Tons of gratis access to exclusive/pricey events, conferences, programs (if you cover them). There will be limited support of our editor directly in personal assistant capacity insofar as said support directly helps elephant (arranging schedule, travel, appearances).

The Managing Editor will create and manage editorial systems ranging from contributor and columnist relations, editing, social media networking, events, spreadsheets of incoming reviews, articles and other editorial matters, editorial/events calendar, copy-editing content and some business management/personal assistant. The editor will manage the editorial interns and, with Lindsey Block, help with day-to-day operations. Working in a focused, busy environmentally-responsible environment, the editor will (quickly) learn about all aspects of running a blog (advertising, social media, new media, events, WordPress, SEO), give input on elephant’s content and contribute reviews and articles.

We all have fun, work hard, are humble about what we’re willing to do (from top, down) and personally inspired. If not a self-starter, fast learner, dumb-question-asker-at-least-at-first, probably not good job for you. We’re a young company, and more about empowering than rules and order.

Email editorial [at] elephantjournal [dot] com with a simple resume and a brief cover letter explaining why you think you’d be a good fit for the editor position. We expect you to be accountable and responsible—we ask for a minimum commitment of a year and a half and you must be in Boulder. [Mandatory] Staff meetings are, right now, Mondays 11:30-5 and Wednesdays 8:45-1:30, though flexible long-term. Weekly meetings include one free yoga class [at Yoga Workshop!] and a free lunch.

elephant journal is dedicated to “bringing together those working (and playing) to create enlightened society.” We’re about anything that helps us to live a good life that’s also good for others, and our planet. >>> Founded as a print magazine in 2002, we went national in 2005 and then (because mainstream magazine distribution is wildly inefficient from an eco-responsible point of view) transitioned online in 2009. >>> elephant’s been named to 40 top new media lists.
