Boulder only: work with elephant!

Assistant Editor / Office Manager : elephantjournal.com (Boulder Only)

elephantjournal.com is your guide to what we like to call ‘the mindful life’: yoga, organics, sustainability, genuine spirituality, conscious consumerism, fair fashion, the contemplative arts…anything that helps us to live a good life that also happens to be good for others, and our planet.

An ecopaper-printed magazine for six and a half years, elephant journal voluntarily gave up its profitable, national reach after it failed to find a way to distribute in an eco-responsible manner—magazines typically sell only 3 out of 10 newsstand copies—and transitioned to the internet to walk their talk in pursuit of the greater good. After almost four years online, elephantjournal.com has a readership of 750,000 unique visitors a month (according to Google Analytics) and is growing steadily thanks to success in social media, our passionate readership, our founder and Editor-in-Chief Waylon Lewis, a growing network of international volunteers and writers, a small but dedicated longterm staff and a revolving team of interns in Boulder, Colorado. @elephantjournal has been voted #1 on twitter for #green content two years running, and our Facebook presence, led by facebook.com/elephantjournal, has a total of 70 plus thousand fans.

elephantjournal.com is looking to hire a part-time (to start) assistant editor / office manager. Main responsibilities are, but not limited to, managing day-to-day editorial operations including maintaining editorial and events calendars, working directly with writers and volunteers, event planning, coordination and management for the Walk the Talk Show with Waylon Lewis as well as other events that elephant sponsors—and managing elephant’s team of interns that meets two days a week. There will be some personal assistant duties including managing Waylon Lewis’ schedule and being on hand to help when needed. You will work closely with elephant’s Director of Operations (who lives in LA) to be that Boulder link. Because elephant is such a small company, a devoted, passionate attitude is necessary. The work environment is fun yet serious, great for someone who is organized, long-term and has an entrepreneurial spirit. This is not for someone who needs a lot of structure and direction—there will, of course, be training and many questions in the beginning are always welcome, however, we’re looking for an independent-minded communicator who takes initiative instead of waiting for someone to hold your hand and walk you every step of the way.

Ideal applicant will have meticulous organizational skills and follow-through, and is comfortable with deadlines. Excellent written communication skills are a must (you should be horribly irritated by bad grammar, ALL CAPS, “its” when “it’s” is intended…). Applicants should also be familiar with http://www.elephantjournal.com and past issues of elephant magazine (we can give you a few copies if unfamiliar).

Position includes access to many events, unlimited yoga in Boulder, some meals, and some travel to local and national events. You must have a cell phone, laptop (mac preferred but PC okay), bike, car (only needed on occasion for events or driving to airport) and have a personal interest in aspects of ‘the mindful life,’ journalism ethics and new and social media. Experience in journalism, social media, management and target readership is a plus.

Please email editorial [at] elephantjournal [dot] com with your resume, a brief cover letter explaining why you’d be a good fit and a few references. The position is 20 hours/week to start with the possibility to move up to full-time, is $14-18/hour after a trial period depending on performance and we require a written commitment agreeing to a minimum of two years with the expectation of three or four years, or life! Only serious candidates apply.

We will be holding interviews immediately. The position would begin immediately with consistent bi-weekly meetings with interns—Mondays and Wednesdays 9:00 to 1:30—as well as an additional 8 to 10 hours working directly with Waylon.

NOTE: Friends of elephant who don’t have experience we’re looking for, please don’t apply.

elephant journal is dedicated to “bringing together those working (and playing) to create enlightened society.” We’re about anything that helps us to live a good life that’s also good for others, and our planet. >>> Founded as a print magazine in 2002, we went national in 2005 and then (because mainstream magazine distribution is wildly inefficient from an eco-responsible point of view) transitioned online in 2009. >>> elephant’s been named to 40 top new media lists.
