Weeklong Wall Street Occupation Continues (Police violence, Videos)

“The one thing we all have in common is that We Are The 99% that will no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the 1%.”~ Occupy Wall Street.

“We succeeded in shutting down the entire street, caging the famous Wall Street bull, and pissing off many, many, tourists.  Our most important triumph, however, was establishing the alternative community that you are now a part of. There are no leaders. But there is pizza.”.-Open Source orientation guide

Contrast that with this quote from the Tea Party Tribune:

“As unemployment rises and home values fall, middle-class Americans are becoming increasingly aware of how closely their fortunes are tied to those embattled corporate interests….The mob has awakened from its slumber and is listening to the peaceful, well-reasoned, Constitutional small-government arguments of the Tea Party. And the people will make their voices heard, not with violence in the streets but in the quiet of the voting booth.”

“Capitalism is based on the principle of mutual benefit – nobody can coerce anyone to buy a product or provide a service. Communism is based on the principle of pure selfishness – I deserve your cash because I exist.”-Teaparty.org:

“This crisis has taught us the real impact that financial markets and institutions can have on working families…the President has demanded accountability and transparency both on Wall Street and in Washington, taking steps to ensure that banks use taxpayer assistance to support lending and create sustainable economic growth. For the long term, the President will create a new regulatory framework that holds market players responsible for their actions and stops fraudulent practices before they take hold”.- White House

From an open-source orientation guide for protestors on the ground:

“You may have heard this movement described as “horizontally organized.” We can imagine the history of Western thought and thus its political organization as resembling a tree: it is vertical, its foundation lies in its roots and age-old understandings of “truth,” and even as the tree grows and branches out into smaller organizational systems, it still points back to, and resembles, its trunk, its core. There are larger, greener leaves at the top than there are underneath the branches; the smallest of which are either trimmed out or let to die.

But this is the 21st century, and we have new ways of imagining how the world should be organized. You can think of the community here as lateral rather than vertical. Like a tree, we are an interconnected system, but our roots spread outwards, they intersect, they tie us together rather than hold us down. So you can imagine the community of Liberty Park Plaza like a horizontal plane rather than a vertical totem pole. We are a blanket. We are a network of individuals woven together tightly enough to keep you warm. We protect each other from the skyscrapers and investment bankers. And we hold this shit down 24/7. We are a true democracy.”
