A Dying Man’s Last Halloween…

The above photo is taken of people very close to me, a MEGA Batman and a mini Batman, a father and son, preparing for Halloween. But in the spirit of superheroes, I would never, ever reveal their true identity.

Maybe it’s just me but I think it’s the most awesome, cutest photo ever.

As playwright Tom Stoppard says, “If you carry your childhood within, you never become older.”

Something interesting happens on Halloween. We don’t just dress UP. We also dress IN.

If you look at this photo deeply, very deeply, both MEGA Batman and mini Batman seem to be taking it very seriously. One in his thirties, one not yet 3.

There’s something about dressing up that stirs an inner warrior still dreaming of saving the world or a swordsmen looking to unleash his passion or a princess who can charm the socks off her pre-school teacher…or daddy…or King of The World.

If you, like me, have gone too long without dressing up for Halloween, I have to ask the question….what’s wrong with us old farts?!

I had the opportunity this past week to see Jeffrey Zaslowe speak. He authored the book The Last Lecture which was the story of Randy Pausch who was dying of pancreatic cancer and wanted to impart upon the world his spirited brand of wisdom before saying goodbye.

See the picture of Pausch and family dressed as The Incredibles for his last Halloween.

As described in the book, the day before going to the doctor to get the latest test results, Pausch turns to his wife and says, “I just want you to know that it feels great to be alive and to be here today, alive with you. Whatever news we get about the scans, I’m not going to die when we hear it. I won’t die the next day, or the day after that, or the day after that. So today, right now, well this is a wonderful day. And I want you to know how much I’m enjoying it.”

That message is all too clear, but nobody said it better than Zaslowe in The Last Lecture, “Time is all you have. And you may find one day that you have less than you think.”
