When we were small, our caregivers–with all the best intentions–taught us something that simply isn’t true: that we “hear with our ears.”242 views

So why look to nature to understand dharma? Because as much as we separate ourselves from nature, we are intrinsically part of it. What we are uncovering is what supports us to carry out our unique purpose. How can we achieve our individual happiness while simultaneously having a positive impact on the world of which we are a part?717 views

Both Rastafari and yoga are for me, movements, in and towards consciousness, ways of being that share the following basic tenets; proper breathing, proper diet, proper exercise, positive thinking and meditation, ahimsa or non-violence and proper relaxation. How an individual then chooses to invoke either in their lives may take different shapes and forms. Inclusivity, Oneness, Unity, Universality; these are the hallmarks of yoga.433 views

In high school, it seemed like everyone had a car, everyone except me,and oh, did I want one. Bad. As it was, I had to take the bus or was driven by my mom, but like every kid, I wanted those four wheels that would mean coolness to my name. In fact, it was early on in my life that I learned a car would have the power to manage how I felt about myself and where I belonged in society.573 views

As we approached the park, the drive became more spectacular. There was the typical Patagonian cloud cover so we did not see the full magnitude of where we were headed, but occasionally we would get a glimpse of the majestic snow-capped mountains bursting through the clouds. It felt like the whole park was hidden, which added to its mystique.561 views

Some say that it is our left-brain dominancy that gives us the feeling of being separate from one another. It is the ‘I am’ and the clinging to the past, logic and definitions, while it is the right-brain that connects and attunes us to one another presently, intuitively and non-verbally.1,748 views

Occupying a yoga posture means to see the small nuances of each moment within it, to hold with the inner and outer vibrations of rising impulses and the layers of reality from which they emerge. May those occupying the streets of cities around the world take up more than just space.266 views

When I read yoga literature, I expect to learn about how to go deeper in my practice – perhaps through different breathing techniques, maybe with meditation tips, possibly because of strategies to get the most out of an asana. Instead, I feel like I’m opening up a catalogue. I have found myself distracted from good stories because I’m enamored with the newest mat comparison chart or floor-gripping gloves.318 views

In this fourth of seven pieces on Buddhist Yoga, we will focus on the third quality cultivated in Buddhist Yoga—the previous two being renunciation and compassionate bochichitta. The third quality of mind that Buddhist yogis and yoginis need is the view of the profound true nature of reality—non-dual awareness.386 views

Barry Shwartz gave a great TED Talk (see video link below) on how the sheer amount of choices available to us has morphed individuals into perpetual unsatisfied consumers of life. This perceived sense of freedom of picking from numerous options, has diluted our ability to experience the experience,1,677 views

Watching the news last year, I was moved to tears during footage of the devastation in the Gulf of Mexico. Mindful of my yoga practice, and what it has to say about the five kleshas or afflictions clouding our view of reality, I decided to make watching the news my yoga practice, right then and right there. I wanted to see what was truly going on, beyond ignorance or avidya. (The first klesha). As I watched, an angry man flashed before the screen and said: Shame on you BP!92 views

The contemplative therapeutic approach emphasizes two meditation practices; shamatha and tonglen. By accepting ourselves and own uncomfortable feelings we can help others a lot better because we understand from the inside out. When we are honest with ourselves about the truth of our own feelings, we are better positioned to be genuinely empathic rather than thinking we get someone from our ideas. Our open presence has the potential to fill the space with warmth, love, and tenderness. It is as if you say with your whole being, “I am here with you and whatever’s going on is okay. We can just be with it here together.”901 views

Pablo transitioned from this realm into the mystery with such grace. I delight in the way he showed up in our time together and I reflect on Pablo’s yoga with great admiration. Pablo’s family, and his profound connection to source, are the benefactor’s of his character and his ability to enter the great transformation with courage and skill.252 views
