What our students learn in the class doesn’t stop here. It goes out the doors, the windows and into the community,” – Educate! Mentor

Educate!, a Boulder and Uganda based organization that develops young leaders and entrepreneurs in Uganda, welcomes young, award-winning, Democratic Republic of Congo Refugee Joseph Munyambanza, one of Educate!’s first students, as the featured speaker at the 3rd Annual Ball.

Munyambanza is a refugee from the Goma area of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He was one of the original students who received a scholarship from Educate! in 2005. He has since gone on to study at the prestigious African Leadership Academy in South Africa, and is currently a University student on a full scholarship at Westminster College in Missouri. In his refugee settlement he started two schools and provided crucial support to women victim to sexual and physical violence in the DRC. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Refugee Law Project, Unreasonable Institute, and many others have recognized Joseph’s groundbreaking work.

At 21 years old, Munyambanza has overcome all odds as refugee from a country that has struggled with civil war, violence and corruption for years. He aspires to be a leader that will transcend the tribal divide and bring peace to the DRC, and once he returns he will be one of the best educated people in a region at the heart of the bloodiest conflict since WWII. He is a testament to Educate!’s approach to develop the next generation of leaders that will solve the greatest challenges facing Africa.

About Educate!

Why we do what we do: To create sustainable solutions to the toughest challenges our world faces, we must re-imagine the purpose of education. Educate! develops young leaders and entrepreneurs in Uganda by providing long-term mentorship and two-years of world-class leadership and entrepreneurship training to help high school students start enterprises that solve poverty, disease, violence and environmental degradation.

Educate!’s alumni program provides ongoing mentorship, training, and access to capital to amplify the impact our students have after graduation. Our model is exponential empowerment – a long term investment in youth so they can positively impact many others throughout their lives. We work with 3,600 diverse young leaders and entrepreneurs across Uganda – the next Nelson Mandela, Wangari Maathai and Mahatma Gandhi of Africa.

Transforming the education system: Educate! partnered with the government of Uganda and the UN International Labor Organization (ILO) to incorporate its leadership and entrepreneurship curriculum into the national education system. Beginning in 2012, the curriculum will reach 45,000 students per year.
