Update, via Reddit: “homosexuality has been observed in chickens. Here’s a petition asking Chick-fil-A to stop serving them.”

And, via Reddit: Chick-Fil-A has donated more than $1,100,000 to anti-gay hate groups through its “charitable” arm, The Winshape Foundation. And, Chick-Fil-A Donated Nearly $2 Million To Anti-Gay Groups In 2010.

And, Jon Stewart’s take.

From 10 days ago: Jim Henson Company to sever all ties with Chick-Fil-A over anti gay marriage statements by their CEO and will divert all existing payments from them to GLAAD.

Huckabee, Palin, Bachmann & hundreds of thousands of Americans come out to support Chick-fil-A.

Always liked Huckabee. Never marked him for a friend of bigots.

Hundreds of thousands of people across the country headed to Chick-fil-A restaurants on Wednesday, answering a callfrom Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas, to show support for the fast-food chain after the company’s president drew criticism for his opposition to same-sex marriage…

Last weekend, Mr. Huckabee used his television and radio programs, as well as Facebook, to help organize an appreciation day for Chick-fil-A on Wednesday.

More than 650,000 people signed up to participate, and tens of thousands “liked” photos of packed restaurants that Mr. Huckabee posted on his Facebook page on Wednesday…

Perhaps a more fitting closing for the letter would be, "Thank you. My pleasure!" I don't agree with Chidk-fil-A on this issue, but I do agree they make one of the best damn chicken sandwiches evAR. And their employees are exceedingly polite and helpful. They have gotten quite a few things right; but are stumbling on a majorly divisive issue that sort of takes me back initially, wondering "just what the hell does the ceo of a fast food restaurant taking such a vocal conservative position on civil rights have to do with a deep fried chicken breast sandwich (extra pickles please) anyway?"

Would you support a company which refused to work with minorities even if you liked the product that company provided? Would you support a company which refused to work with women even if you liked the product that company provided?

The products of these hypothetical companies have nothing to do with being a minority or being a woman. According to your post you would gladly stand in line to get the products of these companies because you like the products they provide. As long as you are a white man, that is.

And BTW, by "work with" I mean "support the fundamental human rights of". Using "work with" is less wordy.

We don't mail or email you? Unless you get our newsletter? In which case, of course, feel free to unsubscribe, it's in your control.

As for unsubscribing because you disagree, the point of this site is, partially, to provide a place for respectful dialogue—not merely to be a place where we all agree with one another, all the time. A place to learn, and question!

Rosa, it's pretty clear to anyone who has been reading my posts that I am also far from the Ele mainstream. But Ele always allows disagreement so long as it's civil and often puts up opposing viewpoints. To my mind that makes it well worth the tiny cost.

although i find the mayor's letter very inspiring and supportive, i don't necessarily believe in his message of not allowing a restaurant in his city. Mr. Cathy has a constitutional right to his views, whether we agree with them or not, just as much as we have the right to our views. 650, 000 people should tell you that he is not the only person with those views. we can only work to remind these folks that there is another group in our community that wishes to share those same constitutional rights.

but not allowing him to build a restaurant would be equally discriminating as his views. if his chains refuse employment or service to anyone because they are LGBT, that is a serious issue and would be handled appropriately by institutions to protect civil rights that are established already.
all an individual can do now is not do business there. i don't agree at all with their views. i am sure there are people working there who do not share those views, but because of necessity, cannot leave their jobs.

he expressed his views. that's it. he will have support, and he will lose support as we have already seen. do you rent an apartment? have you asked for your landlords political views? how about your employer? your co-workers? your neighbors? your family? you might find yourself very surprised. we're all not going to agree with each others views. there is always room for tolerance.
