GOP puts Climate Change Denier in Charge of fighting Global Warming!

“Lamar Smith wins nomination for top House science position.”

US Republican leaders announced on 27 November their recommendation of Lamar Smith, a Republican from Texas, as the new chairman of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Smith’s nomination is expected to be ratified by the House Republican Conference on 28 November.

This is a joke! Only it’s not funny!

The GOP is becoming something of a joke. I say that with reluctance, and without animosity. An article out today in the NY Times talks about how much of NYC, Boston, Miami, SF will be covered in water in 5, 20, 50 years. 97% of relevant scientists agree. And yet we put foxes in charge of protecting hens: that is, Climate Change Deniers in charge of Science legislation and action re protecting we the people.

To people wondering: this is the same guy who fronted SOPA and PIPA, opposed handing over the control of marijuana legislation to the individual states, wishes to extend the blanket of the DMCA, and has recently introduced another act, similar to SOPA and PIPA, laughably called the “Protect Children from Internet Pornographers Act” (PCIP), which would force ISPs to retain information about their customers irrespective of whether they are actually involved in any criminal activity. Of course on top this he is anti-science, a Christian Scientist (not a Christian scientist!) and generally an unpleasantly incompetent character to have in your midst, never mind heading the fricking House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology!

Another:

Republicans began a pattern of intentional government mismanagement a few election cycles ago. It only became glaringly obvious when they appointed John Bolton to the position of Ambassador to the The UN. Bolton was on record calling for the destruction of the UN. He was he perfect man for the new strategy.

Republicans take any government agency they don’t like, and appoint a mismanaging lunatic asshat to supervise it, in the hopes of blaming the agency later. For example: Republicans had a mean streak against FEMA, so they appointed a professional show horse judge to this important position. The hope was that FEMA would unravel, and leadership would then be able to label FEMA incompetent, and dissolve the agency completely.

Of course, we all know that Brownie did “a helluva job”, but then people suffered and died from his complete lack of qualifications. Oopsie! Well, you have to break a few eggs to make an omelette, right?

Internet oversight committees run by imbeciles who talk about “a series of tubes”, and now the science committee run by a Christ Scientist (oh, that is pretty amazing) – it goes on and on, and it is a pattern.

Republicans are only serious about getting re-elected, but on the whole they are not serious about governing. They think our nation’s government is a big funny joke, and they keep writing new punch lines for it. In the end we fall behind other countries, and people suffer and sometimes die from this “strategy”. It is in defiance of their duty, and the oaths of leadership they take.

“A government small enough that you can drown it in a bathtub”.

This is what it is like, watching Republicans try to drown your government. If this were being done by an outside foreign power, we would literally be at war with them.

tl;dr: Much of the time when Republicans complain about mismanaged agencies that “need to be eliminated”, it is because Republicans are intentionally mismanaging said agencies.
