‘Tis the Season,
So they say,
Voice we all hear
And has no name.
In a box
We don’t open
Because a dragon
Pops out, breath
Burning heart and eyes.
‘Tis the season, to give
And receive, to lace
Our cupboards with chocolate
And pies, send cards,
Call friends we love and never see,
Though may not like.
‘Tis the season to forgive, and forget
What we cannot: the one who died
When he was supposed to live,
The lover who left unexpectedly,
The dog that ran off, memories
We are wired to never let fade
Because how else do we learn?
‘Tis the season when we laugh and cry.
‘Tis the season to give to those
Who cannot, feed those who have not.
‘Tis the season when we engage
Giving consciously: a smile
Or a hug, a loaf of homemade bread,
A phone call or a foot rub, or a kindness
To the stranger on the corner ringing a bell.
‘Tis the season to remember time is the most
Precious gift; we give who we are,
Do the best we can, whether or not
It’s Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays,
Whether or not we embrace Jesus
Or listen to Buddha or light candles
Or dance like Skakti;
‘Tis the season:
When difference becomes
Another window to see how we’re alike,
To know what makes us special
Is love shared; care
Is a baby bird that might fly
Or die trying, yet we watch the wings
And see the tree and how hard
She tries and that, for me, is reason.
I am a full time yoga teacher, trained at City Fitness in Washington, DC and Willow Street Yoga Center in Silver Spring, Maryland. I have been writing poetry since I was nine years old. Poetry is my first love and yoga continues to feed my heart. I write because I love it. I teach because I love it. I tell my students all the time: do it because you can. That works for me. I believe in creating opportunity. I believe in helping my self and others. I think faith is the most important gift of life, because when we lose everything else we still have that in our heart. I believe the natural state of being is happiness, or bliss, or Ananda. Life is a celebration. Poetry and yoga help me celebrate. Check out my blog and website here.
