Hamstring Injury Leads to Yoga.

On March 5 Ryan Giggs played his 1,000th game of Football with Manchester United at the age of 39. He attributes much of his success to yoga, a practice he began after a hamstring injury.

And with age and yoga he has grown stronger and more able to play the game, without the inhibition of his nagging hamstring.

He released his Yoga DVD New Giggs Fitness in March of 2011. In the Independent he said the day of his injury:

“It was that day I just thought: ‘I need to do something, I need to not drink as much alcohol, I need to look at my diet, I need to do everything I can, my bed, cars—everything to stop this happening.’ The hamstring injuries were stopping me probably playing 10 or 15 games a season and I was coming up to 30.”

In British soccer, stretching is not a large part of training and his hamstring injury was not healing, so he made his way to a yoga teacher and started to practice. According to The Guardian he started his disciplined Hatha yoga regimen in 2003.

At age 36, he honored his Hatha yoga teacher upon receiving the award for the BBC Sports Personality.

I love you for this footballing shout out!

Whilst Giggs is not my fav footballer (he was in a LOT of trouble over here for Blighty for having affairs, one with his bro's wife (!) and trying to get a super injunction to stop the media publishing it!) you cannot deny that he is a great footballer and is ageing ridiculously well!

And it's nice to see people who are typical yoga peeps in the news for looking after their bodies!
