To Sit Outside. ~ Talia Sukol {Poem}

I sit in still

and the smell of tobacco wafts

through my nose.

I can feel the pleasant breeze

on my shoulders and forehead

I hear the train rumbling

past.

and I fold up my sign

FREE YOGA

ALL ARE WELCOME,

because in New York

being welcoming is the most unwelcome thing you can be.

I simply observe.

I try to fold inward

to watch my breath,

but this is the first time I’ve

sat-sat outside.

Someone is excited and twirling.

She is on the phone.

And I am here with the phone girl

both of us having very private moments

in a very public space.
