Hi. I’m new here.
I am here as a drop-in because I don’t really know much about yoga and I’m not sure yet if I will like it. I have seen women who claim they practice yoga, and I admire their level of fitness, their calm presence and sense of inner strength. I see what they have and I am intrigued.
Plus, I hear yoga is relaxing and I need that.
Are we going to chant in yoga? What exactly is “om?” Is this like a religion?
I have taken exercise classes before, but I wasn’t sure what to wear to a yoga class. I stopped by the local sporting goods store and I hope what I have on is appropriate. I am going to stand near the back, if that is okay. At this point I feel a little bit out of place and feel more comfortable in a spot where I can see what others are doing.
I took Pilates one time. I have heard yoga and Pilates are kind of the same. Is this true?
You seem like you really know what you are doing, but I don’t understand Sanskrit so thank you for saying the alternate English names and also for demonstrating. I also appreciate the adjustments you suggested during the pose.
Thank you so much for being kind and guiding me through with your words so I have a better understanding of what to do. I am grateful that you explained it, but didn’t focus too much attention on me either, which would make me feel on the spot.
You want us to do a headstand? I remember doing those when I was a kid, but I’m not sure I can do them now and that freaks me out a little bit. Oh, you don’t recommend I do them yet? That’s good, I’ll do the prep work you just showed me.

She looks like she is maybe in her late 60’s. That is incredibly awesome and I hope to be in that great of shape at her age. Is that because of yoga?
The people in this class look different than what I expected. I assumed everyone would be super thin and young. Seeing students of all ages and sizes makes me feel a lot better and more at ease. You definitely can’t judge a book by it’s cover! They are all so amazingly fit!
So class is almost over? That went really fast and didn’t even seem like an hour and a half. What is Savasana? I just have to lay here? What is the point of that? Okay, I’ll do it but it seems kind of silly….zzzzzzzz. Oops, I think I just dozed off. I hope I didn’t snore because that would be really embarrassing. I guess we sit up now.
“Namaste,” you tell us. “Namaste,” the class responds. You explain that namaste means your spirit honors the spirit in me. That’s lovely, actually.
I notice my muscles are pretty fatigued. You say I might be sore tomorrow? I didn’t realize yoga was such a workout. I feel really good, though—stronger.
I think I’ll be back.
