The Cancer Family.

I know all too well that having one parent battle cancer is hard enough.

However, that pales in comparison to having both of them fight the disease at the same time.

A few years ago, photographer Nancy Borowick found herself in that exact situation when her parents, Howie and Laurel, both were diagnosed with Stage four cancer. (Laurel was diagnosed with cancer for the third time in September of 2011 and Howie with pancreatic cancer in December of 2012.) The couple, who had been married for 34 years, constantly swapped roles as patient and caretaker.

As a photographer, Nancy Borowick documented her parent’s fight against cancer. Borowick’s photos not only chronicle the low points, such as the endless trips to the doctor for visits and treatment, but also the joys, such as her wedding last October, when both of her parents walked her down the aisle.

The title of the project, Cancer Family, Ongoing, says it all: she shows life doesn’t stop once cancer enters a family’s life. Rather, it continues to go on with all its expected and unexpected high and lows.

Earlier this month, Howie lost his battle with pancreatic cancer, but Laurel continues to fight her battle against breast cancer. She continues to have her journey documented by her daughter.
