January. {Poem}

winter meditation

Forget December,

the hall-decking and making merry

are finally over.

Welcome,

winter.

January is the hot skillet exhaling

its enormous sigh of relief

upon meeting an open faucet.

Let in

the thin, cold wind

as you look out your window at the new year,

which is, for just a moment,

a field

at dawn, after a long night’s fresh snow,

untracked,

without yet its well-worn path.
