What do you do on the side? How do you make space for it?

editing!

Hurrah! Just finished our final edit of my first book, Things I would like to do with You.

For the last year…or two…I’ve been writing, and now editing, and illustrating, my first book. I’d written three or four books, before, but never finished ’em. They were fun, but not that good. This one just flowed, mostly. It was natural, and real. But some chapters were anything but easy, or natural, and they had to be edited, and re-edited, and re-re-re-edited to a point that mighta made Hemingway proud.

If you’d like to order a book, you can do so here. You can read the first chapter, here.

But that’s not what this is about. This is about how difficult, and how possible, it is to do your own thing on the side.

I’m a busy boy. And so are you. But it is do-able: if you have a dream, make time for it. Whether it’s beginning a meditation practice, or writing, or knitting, or running…find time for it. There’s an amazing photo of a young African-American boy doing his homework outside of a 7-11, I think, so that he can use their light to read his textbook. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

What do you do, and how do you make time for it?

It’s a vital question; because, otherwise, we’re just stuck treading water in our life as it is now. And that might be okay. It’s great to leave space in your life. But you also may want to effect change. To change your life, or contribute to your community, or raise a family. And that kind of “side project” takes sacrifice, and focus, and dedication…and before you know it, that side project might just become the whole of your life, and the life you used to think was your life is now the side project.

“They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.” ~ Andy Warhol
