Be Cool & Don’t Be An Assh*le.

by on Mar 19, 2013

“The most terrifying thing is to accept oneself completely.”~ C.G. Jung Be Cool and Don’t Be an Asshole may be the greatest spiritual teaching I’ve ever heard. We’re all assholes sometimes—myself very much included. I’m not proud of it, but if I’m truly dedicated to becoming a better person and cultivating greater compassion for myself [...]

Sometimes I Seriously Hate Writing. Can I Get A Little Help?

by on Feb 24, 2013

Gasp, I know, it’s blasphemy, but it’s so goddamn true. Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful to the word and the cathartic release it so often provides me with, but man, nothing sets fire to my insides more than that of watching that goddamn blinking cursor on my blank page as it taunts me. Oh, [...]

Scar Tissue, Fearlessness & Cutting the Sh*t.

“There’s a bluebird in my heart that wants to get out but I’m too tough for him, I say, stay in there, I’m not going to let anybody see you.” ~ Charles Bukowski Man, am I good at putting on a front. I’m guessing most of you, if you were really to take an honest [...]

Thich Nhat Hanh, Star Wars & How I Became the Third Most Read Writer on elephant journal.

by on Jan 16, 2013

  In December, as an end of the year thank you, elephant journal offered $500 to anyone who blogged 10,000 views and $250 to anyone who blogged 5,000 views. I actually didn’t find out that elephant journal was doing this promotion until a few days before it ended in December. To find out I was [...]

This Actually Happened! The Star Wars 1978 Holiday Special! {Rare Video}

by on Dec 18, 2012

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far, away… this mess happened. I could go into detail about the plot but honestly, it’s just something you need to see for yourself! The special was broadcast only once on Nov. 17th 1978 on CBS and never re-aired, nor was it ever officially released thereafter, and [...]

Change Your Entire Life with this Simple Technique from Thich Nhat Hanh. It’s Kind of Amazing!

by on Dec 12, 2012

To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself. ~ Thich Nhat Hanh I was visiting a friend in New York City this past weekend as we discussed various elements of all things spiritual. Discussion of teachers, techniques, paths and so forth culminated into [...]

A Holiday Serenade from elephant Writers Alanna Kaivalya & Chris Grosso. {Video}

by on Dec 11, 2012

“Merry Christmas. Shitter was full.” ~ Eddie Griswold The holiday season can be one of the most stressful times of the year so Alanna and I decided to get dolled up, record a silly version of a Christmas classic, and offer the readers, writers and staff of our beloved elephant journal community a little levity [...]

Rekindling the Kindergartener Inside.

by on Dec 4, 2012

Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or to usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky. ~ Rabindranath Tagore 6 p.m. Everything was cool. Our non-profit managed to pack the house for a benefit lecture featuring Dr. Bernie Siegel, so the financial pressure was off there. People were [...]

My Very Own Awkward Thanksgiving/Seinfeld Moment.

by on Nov 20, 2012

The calm came in a very blatant form of me recognizing that God’s love was as much in my heart at that very moment, as it was exactly the same in every other person’s heart who sat in that room with me, regardless of what we looked like on the outside.

A Thanksgiving Prayer That Keeps It Really F*cking Real. {Video}

by on Nov 18, 2012

Thanks for the last and greatest betrayal of the last and greatest of human dreams. Here’s some alternative food for thought for those of us here in the U.S., as we head into Thanksgiving week. Much respect to Gus Van Sant for putting this video together. The Thanksgiving Prayer William S. Burroughs Thanks for the [...]

3 Days of Prostitution That Fed My Addiction.

by on Oct 24, 2012

“Show me a sane man and I will cure him for you.” ~ Carl Jung I’m a recovering addict. I’ve abused basically all drugs under the sun but my preferred drug of choice has always been alcohol, which has led me to do some horrific things in my life. Possibly the scariest of which is [...]

by on Oct 17, 2012

“Great writers are indecent people, they live unfairly saving the best part for paper. Good human beings save the world so that bastards like me can keep creating art.” ~ Charles Bukowski I woke up at 4 a.m. this morning thinking about how so many of the “Top 5 Ways To” or “Crazy Hot Sexy” [...]

When It Hurts, It F*cking Hurts. But Then What?

by on Oct 11, 2012

“Breathing in, I calm body and mind. Breathing out, I smile. Dwelling in the present moment I know this is the only moment.” ~ Thich Nhat Hanh It’s crazy how quickly some things can take me from a state of peace and happiness, to one that tosses and turns the pit of my stomach like [...]

Spirituality? I Call Bullsh*t.

by on Sep 28, 2012

“The game is not about becoming somebody, it’s about becoming nobody.” ~ Ram Dass I love diversity and I’m glad that I have friends who have virtually no interest in spirituality because as with anything else in life, they help me consider things from different angles than that of just a spiritual practitioner (though often [...]

by on Sep 20, 2012

“Music is my religion.” ~ Jimi Hendrix Most people wouldn’t associate profound spiritual experiences with the band Van Halen, but the following is a perfect example of why when people have preconceived notions about how spirituality is supposed to be, they may be missing out on some amazing experiences! It was roughly seven years ago [...]

Our Only Hope: My Nomination for the 2012 Presidential Election.

by on Sep 2, 2012

Who’s the more foolish? The fool…or the fool who follows him? My nomination for the 2012 United States Presidential Election is for a man who was aligned with the Tao in ways most of us will only dream of. He had Christ -nature, sacrificing himself for the survival of the human race. He offered hope, when there [...]
