I think of PTSD as a pervasive chaos, caused by your safety response, your fight or flight response, which is supposed to happen. What’s not a good thing is that safety response continues after the danger has passed. That’s when the madness starts.

Labels don’t define a person, but the labels are your ticket to treatment and services. For the purposes of treatment and services, I have PTSD. But the label means nothing to me. I can check all those boxes for PTSD, but i’m still an individual.

The problem is that yoga at the end of a deployment is too late. It needs to come before deployments. I often ask myself where I would be if I didn’t have a practice.

I don’t want yoga to be thought of as an afterthought. I want it to be part of the treatment plan. I want to see psychiatry working in tandem with these holistic modalities so that it is an overall part of treatment.

I’ve realized that the experience of going to war, and being in a war zone, and being scared and seeing bad things happen, believe it or not, were essential for spiritual growth. I think now the military side is saying, ‘You know, you’ve learned the lesson here. I’m stepping aside. You on that spiritual side, you’ve got to come up.’

Yoga has given me the stillness of mind so that I’m not so impatient. It allows me to process things a little more and to think a little more before I act.

Even though you’re home, your old mission is still going on. People need someone to say, finally, “It’s done. The mission’s over, Sergeant.” Your new mission is now go home and stay sane.

People suffering from trauma or PTSD, have often lost their sense of connection with themselves and the world around them. During Yoga Nidra, we want to get them in touch, right away, their deep desire for healing: for feeling reconnected to themselves, and the world.

True freedom arises our of our responsibility to remain interconnected to ourselves and the world around us. There’s no true independent action apart from the whole, and there is no truly independent separate person apart from the whole, except as a belief. When we look at the fact of the matter, we must realize that we’re all connected to each other.

Yoga in general, and Yoga Nidra specifically, helps us re-connect to our innate well-being and bring it to the surface of our experience. This is a powerful moment when a person is able to access this inner felt-sense of well-being and recognize it as something they can never lose.

When we wake up in the morning we may be tired, exhausted, in pain, or experiencing a feeling of despair, hopelessness or helplessness. It’s love that’s ultimately driving us back to the practice mat.

My focus, my energy, my passion is propelling this work. I can’t get this going fast enough. The suicide rates and the spousal abuse rates are skyrocketing.

If we could convince people in the military that it’s simply a matter of switching their military tools of focus in order to achieve a new mission, then they can use the tools of yoga for life, for reintegration.

If you can learn to control any aspect of your physiological, emotional, or mental bodies, that is liberation. That is what freedom ultimately is.
