Profile
John Pappas is a struggling Zen practitioner with a slight Vajrayana palate (but he won't admit it) stumbling between the relative and absolute through the Buddhist Purgatory otherwise known as the Great Plains of South Dakota. Emerging writer, librarian and aspiring hungry ghost, John spews his skewed perception of the dharma all over his personal blog, Subtle Dharma Mouth Punch as well as on the ephemeral Elephant Journal and occasionally (while having no artistic ability to speak of) on Dharma/Arte. John also loves tacos, homebrew, yoginis and obscure Cthulhu references. You can follow him on twitter under the handle @zendustzendirt

by on Feb 26, 2010

Following the Dalai Lama? Watch out. We’ve all heard and are quite excited about the Dalai Lama being on Twitter…but we need to, in these fledgling days of His Holiness’ venture into social media, keep an eye on our favorite refugee religious leader. The Dalai Lama’s account, set up by his office in India, features [...]

We’re Breaking this One: Fox censors Tiger Woods’ Buddhist remarks.

by on Feb 20, 2010

Intro via elephant editor Waylon Lewis: Fox News—home of Brit Hume (“Tiger Woods should leave Buddhism for Christianity”) censors Tiger’s Buddhist remarks in Apology. Naughty, Naughty Fox. The above Buddhist section of Tiger Woods’ apology for his affairs was carried live by Fox News. Here’s CNN’s unedited video of the apology. Fox’s official version, however, [...]

Pretas, Tiger Woods and Buddhist Blogger Round-Up

by on Feb 20, 2010

Pretas, Craving and the World of Tiger Woods images of Preta by Jeff Wigman    Hungry Ghosts or preta are represented as human-like beings in appearence with huge, distended but ultimately empty and echoing stomachs, unable to be filled.  Their scrawny, thin necks and small, toothless mouths symbolize the cause of their unending hunger and craving and their inability to appease it through external means.  Pretas can attempt [...]

Twitter Can Suck It ~ Best Buddhist Twitterers!

by on Feb 18, 2010

ed’s note: I personally am a longtime fan of Tricycle. I also would have included japhyryder in this list. That said, Mr. Pappas is the greatest troublemakin’ heartfelt twangha member out there—my advice is, don’t you dare cross him! Finally, if you’re not included in this list, just include your handle in comments below, so [...]

Worsening Crisis in Mongolia ~ True Snowpocalypse

by on Feb 10, 2010

A True Snowpocalypse: 20 million animals dead? Moving Video. I struggle at times with what it actually means to be “mindful”.  For a sarcastic, passive-aggressive and often over-reacting ass— “mindfulness” is a concept that can be as ethereal as mist…and yet effect our life and livelihood like a brick to the face. What I have [...]

“Are You There, Buddha? It’s me, John.” ~ Buddhists and Prayer

by on Feb 2, 2010

Prayer should be part of our spiritual journey, transforming confusion into clarity and suffering into joy. However, some mistakenly believe that the Absolute is separate and/or different from us. Believing this, their prayers ask for favors, such as health, salvation, fame, victory or the winning lottery numbers. They use prayer in order to manipulate their [...]

eHarmony forced to admit gay people exist

by on Jan 28, 2010

Oh eHarmony, there was always something about you that I didn’t like.  I wasn’t sure if it was the annoying commercials, the latent Christian Right agenda or that annoying old guy who seems to be in desperate needs of getting laid.  Then it dawned on me.  It was the rampant homophobia… It seems that the [...]

iSangha ~ Experiencing Buddhism Online

by on Jan 27, 2010

Being stuck out here in Buddhist Purgatory, we look towards the internet and emerging media for ways of learning and experiencing the Dharma.  This one was brought to my attention by a frien and it is quite comprehensive.  Offered by the  Contemplative Order of Compassion , the blog post below explains most of what it is about ~ The [...]

Dharma Drinks, Buddhist Brewers and Rapping Monks

by on Jan 26, 2010

Its Sunday, early morning and the Buddhists are talking about booze….I am in the Pure Land! For those out there who have made comments about how “stale” and “overly traditional” Buddhism is in Asia, and how the “real” innovation is happening in North America and Europe, here’s an interesting story out of Japan about [...]

Buddhists Angry (Compassionately) at Sectarian Bullsh*t

by on Jan 19, 2010

Angry Buddhists on the Airwaves!  I was asked to be a guest of DharmaDude LIVE Monday night and had a great time talking some Dharma with Dharmacharya Gurudas Sunyatananda.  Topics were expansive; ranging from Haiti, Pat Robertson, Zen practice, blogging and the “lines we draw in the sand”.  We even had callers from the [...]

Buddhist Teachers are Worthless (‘cept when they bring beer)

by on Jan 19, 2010

Wild Fox Zen produces some great posts but I loved this one. It spoke to me as a practitioner with a sangha (both online and “brick and mortar”), as a home-practitioner and as one seeking guidance. Of course by saying I loved it, I mean that I disagreed with it as much as I agreed [...]

Google Gives China the Boot?

by on Jan 13, 2010

I guess that Google has finally “had it up to here” with China’s constant need to censor and spy upon its own citizens.  China evitentally has been hacking into the Google platform to target Chinese human rights activists (you know those activists can be such a pain in the ass). From the Google Blog: In mid-December, [...]

China Tortures “Subversive” Tibetan Filmmaker

by on Jan 13, 2010

With all the recent Buddhist uproar over the comments of Brit Hume, a larger travesty may have been under-reported.  This was brought to my attention by bloggers Nathan over at Dangerous Harvests and Marcus over at the aptly named Marcus’ Journal.  Both prolific bloggers and strong advocates of Engaged Buddhism they have posted an appeal… [...]

Buddhism Destroyed the Beastie Boys (long before it got to Tiger Woods)

by on Jan 10, 2010

Finally! Some commentary on Buddhist thought from a Red State pundit that I can get behind. Buddhism did indeed destroy the Beastie Boys…and, yeah, who wouldn’t want a little Buddhist in them (note to ladies – I am 5’6″, and Buddhist). Cheers Dharma Brothers and Sisters! Lyrics: As I Develop The Awakening Mind I Praise [...]

Ann Coulter receives Hardcore Dharma from Henry Rollins!

by on Jan 10, 2010

Ok, so yes I do know what to expect from Ann Coulter. I know that it is not going to be reasonable conversation or evendecent debate. Personally I hope that one day she simply dissappears in a magical *puff* of designer diet pills, cocaine and stripper dust (stripper dust is the glitter that always hangs on [...]

Don Imus ~ A Bodhisattva For Our Times?

by on Jan 5, 2010

As a response to Brit Hume’s uninformed comments on Buddhism… HUME: He’s said to be a Buddhist. I don’t think that faith offers the kind of forgiveness and redemption that is offered by the Christian faith. So my message to Tiger would be, “Tiger, turn to the Christian faith and you can make a total [...]

Pat Buchanan vs. Buddhist Bloggers. {Tiger Woods}

by on Jan 4, 2010

The Buddhobloggosphere rocked some mainstream press today and yesterday in response to Brit Hume’s poorly worded advice to Tiger Woods (posted by Elephant Journal here). Here are some of the highlights from USA Today Faith and Reason… In case you missed it, Hume called on Tiger Woods to turn away from Buddhism toward Christianity for [...]

New Year’s “Virtual Dharma for REAL Practice”

by on Dec 31, 2009

It never fails.  Once this time rolls around, every Buddhist will sit back and state… I resolve to practice more consistently this year! I am no different.  My practice swell and ebbs just like the tide.  Sometimes, it goes along perfectly and without difficulty and other times it is like sweeping glass.  I don’t [...]

Are Women Equal to Men in Buddhist Clergy?

by on Dec 30, 2009

From the Buddhist Channel: Bangkok, Thailand– The forest monks of Wat Nong Pah Pong want the Council of Elders and the Office of National Buddhism to impose stricter controls on Western monks to stop them from ordaining women. They also want the properties of Thai temples in the West to come under the ownership of [...]

Buddhist crafts for the Holidays.

by on Dec 21, 2009

I am not, by genetic disposition, a crafty person. I am sneaky and slightly conniving but in no way skilled with my hands enough to be crafty. Unless of course you consider wringing my hands menacingly or twirling my mustache bars to be crafts… My wife, however, is crafty as hell. She always makes handmade [...]

The Worstest Buddhist Magazine. ~ John Pappas

by on Dec 14, 2009

Update: for 21 comments (and counting on this post, see ZenDirtZenDust’s original post on the below subject, “Which Buddhist Magazine is Best?”). Well, I can’t say no to a “special request,” can I? First off, I rarely read The Big Three. Occasionally I get the chance to go sit down at a bookstore and work [...]
