Save Money, Save Energy and Shop Locally (sounds like a win/win/win)

Remember back in 2006 when Boulder voters approved the Climate Action Plan (CAP) and it’s accompanying carbon tax? Neither do I, but it sounds like something we would do. Well, here is a concrete opportunity to take advantage of our tax dollars at work. Discounted (actually subsidized) prices are available until the funds run out at McGuckins on the following eco products:

  • Compact flourescent light bulbs - for as little as a buck each

The Sustainable Style Show Toronto: Eco fashion + products galore! [EcoTraction]

photos courtesy of Miranda Pearl

I was at the Sustainable Style Show in Toronto this past weekend. It was a great turn out and I had a lot of fun meeting all the vendors and hearing their stories. I also got to attend the Green Gala an ultra chic event showcasing (sustainable) couture from some of Canada’s freshest designers but more on that next blog…

I got to talk to Kealan, a charming and very hip Torontonian who owns 69 Vintage, a mini vintage store chain and Sonja from Thieves, the designer of the futuristic fashion luxury brand. The girls from Preloved were cool too (I didn’t get to meet the boy). They showed some cute recycled sweaters this time, one of their most popular items. They deal in hundreds of pounds of old used clothing, cut them up with innovative seasonal patterns and create completely new garments. They now get huge orders from some grand scale boutique clothing chains such as Urban Outfitters and Anthropology. (more…)

Think you know what is best for Boulder?

If you have been looking for an outlet for your strong (and of course, correct) opinions on the future of Boulder, here is your chance. I heard about this event through the Boulder Green Building Guild. Titled “Blueprint Boulder”,  It is a grassroots effort to consider the questions of “How do we create the best Boulder possible?” and “What makes great neighborhoods?” They hope to attract broad public participation in this FREE one-time event. elephant journal goes to the Great American Beer Festival: A GABF Hit List [Photo Slideshow: New Belgium, Brooklyn Brewery, Mountain Sun, Great Lakes Brewing and more]

Rusty here, dropping another elephant journal review on you. This time, I attended the 27th annual Great American Beer Festival… or what is referred to as the GABF. It all went down in Denver on October 9th-11th, and I was lucky enough to get a ticket to this sold out event (courtesy Joe Pezzillo, longtime elephriend).

I’m not talking about a small local beer event, I’m talking about the beer festival of all beer festivals… (more…)

THE DHAMMA BROTHERS tells a dramatic tale of human potential and transformation.. This film, with the power to dismantle stereotypes about men behind prison bars also, in the words of Sister Helen Prejean (Dead Man Walking), “gives you hope for the human race.”

“Enlighten Up!” Yoga does cynical cigarette-smokin’ New Yorker Nick Rosen.

Update: “Hi Waylon, I hope you are well and your latest issues hit the stands! Next week I am heading to the west coast to present “Enlighten Up!” at the San Francisco International Documentary Festival. We are only there for two showings: Saturday, October 25, 5:00pm; Tuesday, October 28, 7:15pm…”

Yogaing to a theater near you!

Nick Rosen’s a longtime pal who we’d be honored to count among our best elephriends—only he’s always jetsetting around the world working on climbing films, so we only ever very rarely see his scruffy wiseguy self. A new movie—in which he’s the star—is all about yoga in today’s world, and the effect it can have even on a smokin’ drinkin’ cussin’ cy-nick.

I caught this film—along with 800 other yoginis (heaven, yes) recently at The Boulder Theater, where I joined 10 buddies and devoured organic tamari popcorn and Sunshine Wheat with lemon…and was blown away by the movie, which is equally rug-pulling for those who think yoga is new agey materialistic yuppie bullshit and those who say Namaste with a straight face. Go see the movie if you’re in SF, if you’re not copy and paste this url

http://www.elephantjournal.com/2008/10/elefilm-enlighten-up-yoga-does-nick-rosen/

and forward to your SF friends—they’ll owe you one.
