Downward-facing dog is the most ubiquitous pose in yoga. Acupuncture explains why. This popular yoga pose is the one we see in advertisements and movies, on yoga DVDs, and the covers of health and fitness magazines. Downward-facing dog is taught in beginner yoga classes and returned to again and again by the most advanced yoga [...]

For the first time, I let my intuition take over. It told me you have tried and tried and tried all your life this way; why not try it another way? Why not see where this road takes you? And I did.

With so many styles of yoga available, it is easy to understand how some people might feel confused about choosing the ‘right’ yoga class and teacher. Seeking a qualified instructor can be challenging, you have to trust your gut on some levels but on other levels there are certain basic qualifications for excellence if you want good results [...]

Finding the light at the end of our journey. The first time I went to Uganda, where my community has supported women and orphans for 12 years, we arrived at our destination long after dark. After 20 hours on a plane and eight hours on bad roads, we were pretty disoriented when our car was [...]

Sitting cross-legged on my yoga mat, I looked at my eagerly awaiting students. I asked them if they knew what yoga was. Their hands shot up quickly into the air, and I called on one of them to share: “yoga is helping you breathe, relax, and mental calmness.” My jaw dropped at such an enlightened [...]

The Wise Woman Tradition is both ancient and modern. It has many names and many faces. It is earth-centered. It is woman-centered. It is family-centered. It speaks to the healer within. It nourishes the healer within. It encourages trust in yourself and listening to the wisdom within your own heart. It empowers women to take [...]

“What is within our hearts is what we create in the world. Because our hearts, our minds are polluted . . .we are expressing that pollution by polluting the entire environment. When our hearts are in a natural pure state, then we see every living being as an object of love and compassion. That is the only solution to the problems of the world. Everything else we do is cosmetic and superficial.”

Looking at cancer from a yogic perspective, one word comes to mind: ahimsa, which means non-violence. According to the sage Patanjali, non-violence is the first Yama or right action, the first guiding principle from which to live and choose. And so we must ask ourselves: If we fight our way to health, can we truly [...]

Usually the word home conjures up an image of four walls, a roof, a door and some windows. Ask folks who practice yoga to define home though and you get another set of visuals entirely: “…in the garden…at the top of a mountain breathing in fresh air and noticing the day’s beautiful light…where my mind is still.” Everyone has their reasons [...]

Having my entire body painted and being naked in Central Park is far more my style and essence than being a bride. Go figure. I am a New Yorker and I fully embrace my wild side, creative side, quiet side, upside down side and right side up side. All kinds of new experiences that day. To me that is what life is all about – experiencing.

A couple weeks ago I had the “F&*k-it! I-gotta-get-out-of-here” moment and the first place I thought of, or rather my intuition connected with, was New York City. In fact, it felt like I was being called by Mr. NYC himself and he was sounding like an angry boss saying, “Where the heck are you? You’re supposed to be up here!” So that’s exactly what I did. Within 48 hours I had my flight booked and my hotel reserved.

A Mother’s Day Proclamation, by Julia Ward Howe, in 1870—a sort of manifesto—eventually became what we know today as Mother’s Day. The origins of the day we now think of as “time to take ma out to brunch” or “time to call mama” or, at least, “better get mom a card” are worth reconsidering: Mother’s [...]

We can learn a lot from our failures and use them as a springboard for learning, self-understanding and growth. What does it mean to be content? To be at ease, filled with peace, to know that the universe is supporting you. When we start to swim in the waters of svadyaya or self-study, many traditions lead us towards the same instructions: sit, be quiet and listen

I find it hard to understand in my mind what it means to love you after you are dead — but I still want to comfort and take care of you — and I want you to love me and care for me. I want to have problems to discuss with you — I want to do little projects with you. I never thought until just now that we can do that. What should we do. We started to learn to make clothes together — or learn Chinese — or getting a movie projector. Can’t I do something now? No. I am alone without you and you were the “idea-woman” and general instigator of all our wild adventures.
