Based on all of this, I ended up in a middle position, where I don’t believe we should ban GMOs, but also think we need to be very careful and limited in allowing them, based on the characteristics of particular GMO crops.

Ever since I can remember, I have been a dreamer. I was seeking transformation without even knowing it. I used all kinds of improper tools, but somehow I got lucky and I’m still alive! I have always believed in myself and have always thought of myself as one lucky gal who had many options. Even when life beat me and kicked me when I was down, I knew there would be a light at the end of the tunnel…

Letter to the Editor. Last week’s commission hearing was the culmination of two years of a lack of leadership from every sector; business, citizens, farmers and policy. That opened the door for the world’s largest agricultural leader to waltz in (from out of state) and say they want to own the Open Space that our [...]

Depending on whom you ask, Americans throw away 25-50 percent of their food annually and yet, one in six people are going hungry every day. The issue doesn’t end there. Food that is deposited into landfills creates methane, the ninth-largest source of greenhouse gas.

I remember asking the workshop leader: “Doesn’t romantic love serve some purpose?” She stewed over the question for a moment and somberly implied that it was completely hapless.

Although Colorado is far from the salt and sea, people from all over the planet have chosen to make this mountain state their home, and are aware of and want to become more informed about how the decisions we make can effect the oceans so far away. Consumption of all our natural resources including the snow that falls and waters carried in the rivers that swell in spring all lead to the ocean.

Do I think we are going through a flowering of human consciousness? I don’t know. The mandate is to actively work on such a great awakening, right now, with every cell of our being, give it everything we’ve got.We can’t wait for governments, individual politicians, Whole Foods, or elephant journal. We can’t wait for anybody! Whether it’s inevitable or the longest shot in the world. Let’s completely offer 100 percent of everything we have to that possibility. I believe that. I believe I would be doing that even if there was no chance.

There are many reasons why I’m voting yes on 2B & 2C. I could talk about how I don’t like that a corporation (a monopoly, at that) has 100% control of a basic public service. I could talk about how Xcel has raised my electricity rates by 20% over the past few years. Or I could go on about how citizens have absolutely no say in what Xcel does, where their energy comes from, and how much they charge because the Public Utilities Commission isn’t elected by voters. But, instead, the most basic reason why I’m voting yes on 2B & 2C is because it’s just the right thing to do for our community. And here’s why.

This week, I am excited to catch Gregory Alan Isakov at the Fox Theater on Friday night (October 21). Of all the artists I’ve seen, Gregory – whether solo and acoustic or with his band of talented musicians – always creates a performance with emotional depths and soaring poetics that leave me rooted in my humanity while simultaneously feeling as though its been transcended (perhaps, it makes me feel the wholeness of this human experience). Of the many amazing things curating in Boulder’s ever evolving scene of new, hip and wonderful artists growing their body of works, Gregory Alan Isakov remains a permanent favorite on my playlists and live shows that I must see. I was one of the lucky ones who saw him perform a benefit barn concert for Lisa Sanchez, a dear friend of Elephant Journal, at Frog Belly Farm earlier this year. It was a special one, and I began to reminisce about the experience to share with ele readers. If you haven’t seen Gregory yet, go. You’ll thank me later. Here are the sweet memories of the February 13, 2011 benefit show.

Van Jones, the former White House Special Advisor for Green Jobs, discusses his support for ballot measures 2B & 2C in Boulder. Measures 2B & 2C give the city the authority to investigate the feasibility of creating a municipal power utility. 29 cities in Colorado (Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, Longmont, etc) and thousands across the country already run municipal power utilities. 2B & 2C have been endorsed by the Daily Camera and the Boulder Weekly. For more information and to see the list of thousands of local businesses and citizen endorsers, check out http://www.RenewablesYes.org.
Van Jones is the founder of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, Green For All, and was named a “Hero of the Environment” by Time magazine one of the “12 Most Creative Minds of 2008″ by Fast Company.
