All I Want is…Everything. A guest editorial from elephant author Andréa Balt (a few weeks back Kate Bartolotta also wrote a guest editorial). There’s one motor, one murmur common to all ways of life; no less necessary than oxygen, no more optimistic than sunshine. Some call it hope. As skeletal and necessary as hope seems to [...]

I believe paying hunters are cowards and thieves. They hide under the strong arms of the professional hunter. They are stealing a false sense of virility, which they wear like the cheapest cologne on the planet. They don the fool’s grin, but not in a good way.

Ten years ago, George W. Bush introduced the world to his “axis of evil”. Delivering the annual State of the Union speech, he vowed to ratchet up spending on “homeland security”, by pre-emptively attacking phantom enemies. Chief among these was Iraq, which dared “to flaunt its hostility toward America” (in the face of threatened “shock [...]

So even though Bob likes to provoke (much like his hero Glenn Beck) sometimes it’s best to put political/religious/social differences aside and enjoy being [...]

By Daniel Simpson This summer I had the privilege to be taught by B.K.S. Iyengar. At almost 93, his fire still burned. Visiting China as an ambassador for yoga, he stood for hours at a stretch drilling 1,300 students. While the emphasis was technically on postures, they were the vehicle for an integrated masterclass, combining practical [...]

Plastic floats upon the ocean water… it does not sink, so there is still a chance for us to see it… collect and gather what we have forsaken and lost.

Philosophers and sages throughout the ages have counseled us that beauty and truth lie in what is eternal and that true happiness is to be found in loving that which is permanent and transcends the particular. And it’s this gesture beyond the particular towards that which is timeless that elevates Sturman’s photography to the status of great art.

When I look into my own heart, there is anger on the surface – that people are loosing their jobs, and homes, and that we are part of a system which sends wealth to a small few. When I look deeper there is sadness, for all those people affected by this financial crisis. And sadness for those perpetuating the crisis, stuck in a cycle of greed. I am sure they are not truly happy, even with all the filthy lucre in the world.

…Never before in our history have we been able to mass-filter such large and dynamic occurrences in some of the largest cities in the world and convince most of America that something entirely different is going on. I’m not praising this because it’s constructive or good, but for the shear power and force we as humans have over our minds and the minds of others.

It is not about how we are going to make changes, because we can’t see that answer. The situation is too complex and too out of control. All we can do is say “no.” At first it will not change a thing, but if we can let the emotion build, if we can continue to gather the energy, it will become a force of its own.
