Memphis, the birthplace of rock n’ roll, home to Elvis and famed Beale Street, this music city right on the banks of the Mississippi River. Known for it’s bbq, I was beyond delighted with incredible food that was abound for a little ol’ vegan. The city is rich with history and boasts some famous folks [...]

Finding Purpose in a Bag of Beans. ~ Amanda Stuermer

by on Feb 6, 2012

Does God think I’m a total whiner? Does he look at all I have been given and think, “when will she be satisfied?” People across the globe are struggling for daily survival, and I am asking for guidance on my life’s purpose.

Rubber for Everyone: Mat Rats of All Kinds.

by on Feb 6, 2012

It’s only January and I’ve got Wanderlust on the brain. The Squaw Valley event isn’t for six moths, but I’m already hyped for the food, music, teachers, weather, and for the people. By which I mean the fellow attendees— With so many different yogis at the festival, the people are fun to watch. Every yoga festival’s got [...]

by on Feb 2, 2012

Every morning the sun rises. A massive ball of fire, of spherical perfection and hot bright plasma floats in the middle of our solar system. It knows when to rise and fall and it does so regardless if we tell it to or not. Tomorrow morning, roll out of bed and stare at it. It’s so bright it’ll hurt your eyes and its genius proportions and miraculous properties are still there and will always be there, even if you forget about them. It will warm your spirit if you let it.

Slow Travel: Amalfi.

by on Jan 31, 2012

Slow Travel: The Poetic Portmaster of Amalfi. I have been out of many ports where the marina guys do the same work, usually lazily and not with much presence. But Aniello was different. His work was easeful, skillful and dare I say? Sexy. His job is a barefoot work of art. ~ Call it love [...]

In Defense of Festivals: 10 Reasons to go to Wanderlust.

by on Jan 23, 2012

Okay, I know that Wanderlust has expanded over the years and along with their city events they have a number of other large festivals across the U.S., but I’m going to make myself a target and assert that not a one of them cam touch the scenery at the California Wanderlust site. Where else can you practice handstands 8,000 feet above sea level to the faint sounds of kirtan and a gentle pine scent that no car freshener can touch? Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevadas are extraordinarily compelling. Want to give Gaia some love? There’s no better place than Squaw Valley, CA.

Miami Nice: Healthy Dining Hot Spots

by on Jan 18, 2012

My hometown of Miami is finally getting on a healthier kick! And I have to say, it was worth the wait! With a plethora of healthy, vegan and even raw places to dine, Miami is definitely becoming a force to be reckoned with in the veg world. Oddly enough, of all the “vegan” cities I [...]

The calm after the storm: Day 4 Hike in Torres del Paine National Park

by on Jan 17, 2012

As we hiked away from the refugio, we could see the imposing Los Cuernos (“the horns”) in the background. Cristian told us that the refugio at Los Cuernos was his favorite one in the entire park and we could finally understand why. On a cloudless day, the jagged peaks of Los Cuernos soared majestically in the sky, reaching upwards behind the refugio. The view was quite stunning and serene.

Managing the Mouse – Eating in Disney with Dietary Challenges.

by on Jan 16, 2012

Disney is very accommodating to dietary allergies or other issues. They won’t accommodate your preference for a burger at the Italian place, but if you are lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, allergic to nuts, etc., they will do what they can, particularly when given the right notice.

by on Jan 12, 2012

Bali has this way of sending you through, very intensely, the karmic blender. If you want to hide, well, don’t come to Bali. Your soul better be ready, because it is a wild wild ride. A wet, cold day hiking in the icy Patagonian rain

by on Jan 11, 2012

Then Cristian said more urgently, “Is coming the rain, big rain” and we leaped at high-speed under a large bush for cover. According to Cristian, no matter what kind of advanced rain gear you have, you would be completely soaked within five minutes thus it was best to take cover and wait it out. I had never seen such an intense combination of wind and rain before in my life. It was completely, utterly wild.

The Camel-haired Belt ~ Zali Nash

by on Nov 28, 2011

Long lines stream down the river bank where the masses are herded into small flocks and are allowed to walk in ten metre bursts before stopping for about 5 minutes at a time. On the pilgrimage to the hairy icon, you can purchase a snack, a cup of tea or go to the loo. It is a highly orchestrated, beautifully organised event.

Scrambling for a new way to live. Carving trees with tattoos and sewing peacock feathers onto our clothes… spiritual soldiers renaming the birds and peering deep into the ocean to see where all the fish have gone. Plastic floats upon the ocean water… it does not sink, so there is still a chance for us to see it… collect and gather what we have forsaken and lost.

by on Nov 5, 2011

Nestled in the lush green leaves is a black, wrinkled face. A female gorilla sits, five feet from me. She is quiet and calm. Her eyes are the color of burnt umber, wizened by thousands of long, star-lit nights on the volcano. She holds my gaze and I well up.

An escape to Patagonia: How this incredibly beautiful, remote place cured my soul.

by on Oct 25, 2011

Patagonia has captivated and inspired the imagination of explorers and travelers for centuries. Geographically, Patagonia is one of the most remote places on earth. Located on the Southern tip of Chile and Argentina, and only 621 miles from Antarctica, Patagonia feels like it is at the end of the world. Patagonia’s remote and utter isolation combined with its spectacular scenery has added to its mystique. It is truly a magical place that is relatively untouched by man.
