The fact that she was experienced with psychedelics was a big a plus for me at the time. But I probably ended up in India with her because God was she beautiful: Twenty-Five. Brown skinned, green eyed, braided blonde hair.

The primordial wisdom of yoga and how it was traditionally passed from teacher to student has evolved; it is this evolution that makes yoga potent. We must look to the past to create a better future, not to replicate what was. Imitating the ancient systems is futile, life and living is impermanent, we as yogis should know this.

With so many styles of yoga available, it is easy to understand how some people might feel confused about choosing the ‘right’ yoga class and teacher. Seeking a qualified instructor can be challenging, you have to trust your gut on some levels but on other levels there are certain basic qualifications for excellence if you want good results [...]

Others are afraid that the practice of yoga will interfere with their personal belief system. This subject came up again during one of my one of my yoga teacher training [...]

Sri K. Pattabhi Jois called Ashtanga a ‘breathing and movement system’. The most accessible way to get to the heart of the rhythm of this breathing and movement system is to doggedly follow the actions of the diaphragm and see how those actions translate into vinyasa, into sequences of rhythmic opposing movement patterns.

The Wise Woman Tradition is both ancient and modern. It has many names and many faces. It is earth-centered. It is woman-centered. It is family-centered. It speaks to the healer within. It nourishes the healer within. It encourages trust in yourself and listening to the wisdom within your own heart. It empowers women to take [...]

“What is within our hearts is what we create in the world. Because our hearts, our minds are polluted . . .we are expressing that pollution by polluting the entire environment. When our hearts are in a natural pure state, then we see every living being as an object of love and compassion. That is the only solution to the problems of the world. Everything else we do is cosmetic and superficial.”

Looking at cancer from a yogic perspective, one word comes to mind: ahimsa, which means non-violence. According to the sage Patanjali, non-violence is the first Yama or right action, the first guiding principle from which to live and choose. A couple weeks ago I had the “F&*k-it! I-gotta-get-out-of-here” moment and the first place I thought of, or rather my intuition connected with, was New York City. In fact, it felt like I was being called by Mr. NYC himself and he was sounding like an angry boss saying, “Where the heck are you? You’re supposed to be up here!” So that’s exactly what I did. Within 48 hours I had my flight booked and my hotel reserved.

There is no reason, in the abstract sense, that yoga needs to be validated by science. People, however, differ in what they need. If you are a practicing yogi who has received the benefits of yoga you have little reason to need science to validate your personal experience.

In conversations about spirituality, I often encounter the perspective that truth is entirely relative and that there is no such thing as “reality,” because everything is perception. Some people also like to talk about certain proposed “absolute truths” that are beyond the mind or the material plane and have to either be accepted on faith or experienced directly during say, meditation.

I find it hard to understand in my mind what it means to love you after you are dead — but I still want to comfort and take care of you — and I want you to love me and care for me. I want to have problems to discuss with you — I want to do little projects with you. I never thought until just now that we can do that. What should we do. We started to learn to make clothes together — or learn Chinese — or getting a movie projector. Can’t I do something now? No. I am alone without you and you were the “idea-woman” and general instigator of all our wild adventures.
