There was a traditional Tibetan welcoming tea and rice ceremony for the arrival of the 22-year-old high lama, the 17th Karmapa to Boulder on his first trip to North America. I sat behind his travelling attendants (who were calmly awaiting the arrival in the front of the large room filled with excited Kagyu Buddhist students and the hubbub of State Department security), amused and amazed at the meeting of east and west, red robes and white tea cups. ~ Corey Kohn
