Book review: A Step Beyond Madness (Virgil Martinez)

This debut effort from local author Virgil Martinez is part memoir/part spiritual exploration based on a series of journal entries written while Martinez was undergoing various illnesses and their treatments.  As the book progresses, the author chronicles various dreams and visions he has that at least in part seem to be connected to his physical, mental, and emotional states.  Rather than dwelling on the negative impacts of his health issues, Martinez uses these as opportunities for growth as an individual.  While it would have been nice to see more reflection around the dreams/visions and their importance and impact on his life, the story itself is rather interesting.  At times amusing, at times saddening, this book should appeal to a wide range of readers.  Available from the author’s website.
