The morning horrors of looking in the mirror once you wake up and seeing what monster you are today should not be your biggest worry.  It’s the next step that should cause you some strife.  The transformation of your sleepy self into an awakened beauty.  That’s where the problems begin.  Why?  Because you really have NO IDEA what is in your cosmetics. Here’s a little article via Treehugger that brings on some huge concerns.

There are no safety assessments required for cosmetic products sold in the U.S.

The United States has no safety standard for cosmetics. Period. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not require companies to prove that personal-care products are safe for use before they put them on store shelves.

The industry’s attempt to police itself hasn’t fared any better: Only 11 percent of cosmetics ingredients have been assessed by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel, a self-regulating body that is the only publicly accountable institution that reviews cosmetics ingredients for safety in the United States.

“It’s time for wholesale reform of the cosmetic safety laws in the U.S., which is far behind other countries such as Europe and Canada,” says Malkan. “The current system of self-regulation in the U.S. is a complete failure—it fails to protect health and it fails to inspire innovation.”

    I used to make fun of my girlfriend who one day threw away all her cosmetics, went with the completely organic, natural, chemical-free brands, and a year or two later, I am doing the exact same thing and while I love and cannot live without my makeup, the mineral makeup natural yummy stuff is the only thing I put on my skin!!
