Olympia Snowe announces she won’t support Senate’s healthcare bill. Original photos by ele’s Caroline Treadway!

Nov. 19, 2009-Maine Senator Olympia Snowe is mobbed by reporters after announcing she would not support the Senate's version of the health care bill. Last Saturday, the Senate voted to bring the bill to the floor and to bar filibusters.

I’ve been trying to get photos of Olympia Snowe since I got my press pass in September. It’s been months. Her phone line is always busy. I stake out one doorway and she sneaks out another. Senators have tons of ways to evade the press in the labyrinthine Capitol complex, if they want. Last Thursday I was on the Hill, desperate for lunch after a day of shooting, and there she was—Olympia Snowe. At first, I didn’t even it was her. All I could see was a knot of reporters huddled outside the door to the Senate floor. I peeked through the tangle of arms and voice recorders, and couldn’t believe it—the coveted Snowe! I grabbed my camera and started snapping away. Here’s what I got.

Thanks for clarifying. Nice shots of a great public servant.

Yes, I'm a press photographer, the post is pretty much just photos.

I don't really get this. The headline sounds like news, but the article is … an announcement that someone got pics of the senator?

Anyway, Snowe is one of the last of a dying breed: the northeastern Republican (fiscally conservative, socially moderate — what the party looked like before it was overrun by the scary southern socially conservative religious right). I hope she keeps up the good fight, even when she does bump up a President I hope succeeds.
