Green saves Green

Whole Foods continues to prove that a publicly-traded company can continue to lead the way environmentally and make dough doing so—retaining customer good will and saving money while getting kajillions of bucks’ worth of free press. Love it:

Via the Statesman: Whole Foods Market Inc. vowed to … reduce consumption in stores by 25 percent per square foot by 2015.

“Saving energy costs less than buying it, so we are reducing our appetite for energy from both traditional and renewable sources,” said Kathy Loftus, Whole Foods’ global leader of sustainable engineering and energy management.

In announcing the initiative, company officials say they will enact more “green building” practices, as well as other measures to increase energy from renewable sources (such as using solar and wind power) and cut emissions.

The company has earmarked $10 million over the next 18 months “for additional retrofit and upgrade projects,” to increase the efficiency of its refrigeration, lighting and air-conditioning systems, Loftus said…for the whole story, click over to The Statesman.

    I heard they throw away a ton of organic food BC its too expensive for most people to buy it on a regular basis, like produce… Youd think they would just give it away rather then look like a looser dumping it in the trash! Im boycotting them, they have the power to change that and they dont!

    To be fair, they can't give away the food becaues it's a HUGE liability. If you give food that has gone bad to someone, and they get sick, they can sue you until the ends of the earth. I used to get really frustrated watching all the waste when I worked in restaurants, but a chef explained it to me. It sucks, and is a symptom of the quick to sue society we live in.

    You would think there would be some way around this. I know that Trader Joe's give food to the food pantry here on a regular basis….although I am not sure it is the fresh produce. Perhaps there could be some sort of middle go between??

    Most Whole Foods "retire" their produce to local food banks and homeless shelters. Just about every store has a relationship with a food bank, soup kitchen etc. The abilities of these entities to pick up the food and their capacity for storage plays an important role as to how much is used and how much is thrown out. No, I don't work for WF, I have been close to the situation in the past.

  3. Amen! That said, organic is worth it, you'll save on healthcare longterm. Fair-trade costs more, the price of ethics is included!

    That said that said, be sure you're buying "mindful" products, just 'cause you're buying it at a green-minded grocer WFM don't mean it ain't junk (as CEO Mackey himself put it).
