Update: Don was killed.

Prayer request for Liberation Prison Project student facing execution.

Dear Dharma Friends,

Don Wackerly has been a student of Liberation Prison Project since 2006. He has been regularly practicing and studying over the past 4 years.

Don is scheduled for execution in McAlester Oklahoma on 14 October. We are dedicating prayers for a stay of execution, although it seems likely that his execution will proceed as scheduled.

Can you please put Don on your prayer lists. If you are able, please dedicate Medicine Buddha puja or sadhana and Medicine Buddha and Chenrezig mantras for Don.

Don continues to do his practice and to express gratitude for all the Dharma support he has received.
Prayers were dedicated for Don during the Light of the Path retreat and Lama Zopa Rinpoche has recently given Don practice advice.

Here is an inspiring brief talk by his lawyer, Susan Otto, at Sravasti Abbey, testifying to the positive transformation Don has made since meeting the Dharma:

Thank you,

Am not sure why I should pray for someone that killed another human being in a violent attack?

  3. Bob Hamilton says:

Katie…like you I can not condone the taking of another life.. My prays are for Don and can only wish him well in his new life where perhaps he can resolve any residual karma and become enlightened for the benefit of all. These prays come from Australia.

Why should we pray for someone who killed another human being? We are all interdependent. Only when we open to the grace of forgiveness can peace arise. To have peace in the world, it can only arise when peace is in the heart first. Do you want peace? I am not suggesting forgiving the action, indeed it is heinous. I am aspiring to forgive the actor, who in this case is taking responsibility for his actions and is asking for the opportunity to contribute to humanity in a wholesome, beneficial way. Forgiveness can only come from compassion. Please have mercy ….. on yourself. Thank you for listening.

It's a good question, and one good to think about. Should we have compassion for those who hurt others?
